Westboro church calls off protest of girl's funeral

The Westboro Baptist Church has agreed not to picket a nine-year-old girl's funeral in exchange for airtime on radio stations in Arizona and Toronto.
The WBC is a Christian group with an extreme anti-homosexual agenda based out of Topeka, Kan., and headed by Pastor Fred Phelps.
With just 70 or so members, mostly from Phelps's family, the group has drawn widespread attention for protesting the funerals of soldiers, politicians and murder victims, arguing their deaths are God's punishment for North America's sins.
The group had planned to picket Thursday's funeral for nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green in Tucson, Ariz. Green was one of six people killed in a shooting rampage Saturday that left Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords fighting for her life.
But the group agreed to call off the protest in exchange for airtime on 102.1 The Edge in Toronto and KXXT-AM in Phoenix, Ariz.
Shirley Phelps-Roper, the church's spokeswoman, was on the The Dean Blundell Show on The Edge Tuesday morning and will be on again Thursday morning at 9 a.m.

“She spewed her religious rhetoric and she agreed not to go to the funeral,” host Dean Blundell told QMI Agency. “I just couldn't stomach those parents out there, with those idiots across the street screaming at them.”
Blundell has invited Phelps-Roper on the show five or six times before, he said, usually to prevent the group from attending Canadian events, like Toronto's Gay Pride Parade.
“It's an effort to expose her for the crack she is and protect Canada from her,” he said.
Blundell hopes Thursday's appearance will convince the WBC not to protest the other funerals from Saturday's shooting.
KXXT-AM, a Christian radio station, confirmed that a member of the WBC will appear on The Steve Sanchez show between 7-8 a.m. Saturday.
“The host and owner of the radio show negotiated this interview in exchange for a promise from the members of that controversial church not to picket the funeral of the victims of this shooting rampage in exchange for the interview. Steve Sanchez has done this out of love for the community of Tucson and the victims,” the radio station said in a statement.
“KXXT does not agree in anyway with the representative of this church in Kansas nor does Steve Sanchez.”
The Arizona legislature passed a motion Tuesday banning protests at or near funeral sites, but the WBC indicated it would not be deterred by the new rules. Green's funeral, as well as that of U.S. District Judge John Roll, another victim of Saturday's shooting, are still listed on the WBC's online picket schedule, which was last updated Tuesday

Honestly, I really would love to kick that Phelps jackass in the nuts numerous times, preferably with steel-toed boots. He's a disgrace to humanity and I do NOT understand why they let him get away with the **** he DOES get away with. Free Speech should only go so far. Planning on picketing the funeral for a NINE YEAR OLD GIRL? I cannot believe how much much of an a**hole he is.

And they would not be deterred by the new rules(had the legislation gone into effect)? I have a feeling that they'll picket the wrong funeral someday and then there will be quite a few asses kicked.

Yeah, buying these people off is just too silly....I personally think that counter-demonstrations should be organized....I bet a thousand people would have showed up, let them surround the Westboro folks, hiding them from view, rendering their "protest" useless.

Either that, or have a group go down and kick their ****ing teeth down their throats.....no jury in the USA would convict them.

Actually, I think I like Option Two.

It is not presumptuous, it is obvious.

Oh really? How so? I don't think it at all obvious that a person who is mentally deranged must be apolitical....that's quite the stretch considering he had plans to assassinate Gifford.

He's a wacko, so that means he can't be political...that makes a whole lot of sense Colpy...
...You need to expand your horizons if that appeals to you as something obvious.

I took a look at his youtube channel....believe me, I don't know how this guy managed to dress himself.

He couldn't gather together a coherent thought....political or otherwise.

The Tucson Memorial is a Democratic pep rally.. 8O

Actually, Obama has done an admirable job of staying above the mud-slinging stupidity........much to his credit.

So? Again, just because he's deranged doesn't mean he was a vegetable. There is nothing obvious about his motive.

You're splittin' hairs here.........you are absolutely right, there is nothing obvious about his motive....because all of his motives are insane.

Insanity is not a political philosophy.

Although sometimes I wonder when I listen to Jack Layton. :)

You're splittin' hairs here.

No, I'm stating a fact. Whether or not someone is insane or not is irrelevant. They still have motives. And that means that:
This crime had nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans, it was a random crime committed by mentally deficient person. Nothing more.
is not obvious. It's presumptuous, as I said at the start.

A paranoid schizophrenic, for example, has lost touch with reality, not lost the ability to act on motives...

I don't frankly see how anyone could think that they can dismiss motives because of mental illness. The only explanation that makes sense is that a person who believes this:
This crime had nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans, it was a random crime committed by mentally deficient person. Nothing more.
doesn't know a thing about mental illness.

I think they should have been allowed to protest, and make sure the police were busy with other duties elsewhere. And see what happened.

"Just as we saw after Virginia Tech, the Arizona tragedy has once
again exposed fatal cracks in our background check system," said
Bloomberg. "The law says that drug abusers can't buy guns, but even
though Jared Loughner was rejected by the military for drug use and
arrested on drug charges, he was able to pass a background check and
buy a gun. It should be clear to everyone that the system is broken
and it is time for our leaders in Washington to step up and fix it."

To be clear, if you're using this event to criticize the "rhetoric" of Sarah Palin or others with whom you disagree, then you're either: (a) asserting a connection between the "rhetoric" and the shooting, which based on evidence to date would be what we call a vicious lie; or (b) you're not, in which case you're just seizing on a tragedy to try to score unrelated political points, which is contemptible. Which is it?

Seems logical to look at who and how the background checks are being done doesn't it?
Curious to know if anyone is going to the Gun Show this weekend in Tucson?

I only wish.

In a couple of months...........

You are right about the background check, there appears to be a problem somewhere..........I believe this guy was charged with a drug offense......

On the day of the memorial this woman releases a video to complain about being a victim, and can't even do that without isolating yet another group. No class and no brains. She shows no leadership qualities whatsoever and should consider a different line of work.

The leftys' hate for this woman is amazing ain't it???

If she had not responded to the attack adds against her.....they would have called her a wus hiding in Alaska until the storm blows over..
She responds and they find one word that is rarely used in its proper context to hang her with....

Sooo predictable...

Ya sure, everyone was waiting for her to make her own victim impact statement yesterday. Only seems right being it was the day of the memorial. She's one class act.

As one journalist wrote:

"In the span of a single news cycle, Republicans got a jarring reminder of two forces that could prevent them from retaking the presidency next year. At sunrise in the east on Wednesday, Sarah Palin demonstrated that she has little interest -- or capacity -- in moving beyond her brand of grievance-based politics. And at sundown in the west, Barack Obama reminded even his critics of his ability to rally disparate Americans around a message of reconciliation."
