Video shows child, 4, shoot at police in Utah

A four-year-old child shot at cops at a McDonald’s in Utah, according to body-camera footage released by the police.

The shooting happened on Feb. 21 when police in Midvale were trying to arrest a man for allegedly brandishing a firearm at McDonald’s drive-thru staff after receiving a wrong order.

In the video, recently released by police, at least four police officers are seen surrounding a car parked in front of the McDonald’s.

Officers are heard ordering the man in the white vehicle to open his door and step out of the car. But when he doesn’t follow their orders, police are seen opening his door and dragging him to the ground to cuff him.

At that moment, an officer who turned around saw a gun pointing from the backseat of the car, shouts “gun” right before the child fired a shot.

An officer pushed the gun out of the way right before it went off, hitting the McDonald’s building, ABC4 Utah reported.

The child, who was one of the passengers in the backseat of the car, shot at officers after his father ordered him to shoot, police allege.

Once police realized the shooter was a child, they surrounded the vehicle comforting two children who are seen crying as police guide them out of the car and away from the crime scene.

Police said the other child was a three-year-old sibling.

Sadaat Johnson, 27, has been charged with child abuse, aggravated assault, and interference with an arresting officer.

The government is looking to find out what expertise or capacity there is in the marketplace for collection and transportation, tracking, storage solutions, package inspection, destruction and post-destruction recycling. This is more than two years after they announced this program, and they don’t have even the basic structure, despite having already spent more than $8.8 million on it.

“No buyback program exists,” said Tracey Wilson, of the Canadian Centre for Firearms Rights, in an interview recently. “So, to put out this price list is not only premature, it’s intentional.”

Wilson said he believes the Liberals are publishing their price list to turn the headlines from problems with inflation, airport delays, passport problems and more onto an issue that gets them positive headlines in much of the media.

The Trudeau government’s announcement of a price list for their much hyped gun buyback program is nothing but pure political theatre.

Not only there isn’t a program to collect and destroy the guns they now claim are too dangerous for licensed, law-abiding Canadians to own, they are still looking for ideas on how to build it, more than two years into the matter.

Part of the problem for the government is that the RCMP has said they can’t be in charge of this program in terms of collecting firearms. While the Mounties have a large presence in Western and Atlantic Canada, there are large areas of Ontario and Quebec with virtually no RCMP presence.

Canada Post has also reportedly told the government that it can’t be the main collection point for hundreds of thousands of firearms, either. While the post office has locations in almost every community in the country, many of those locations are in retail establishments like pharmacies, and the system isn’t set up to safely handle the tracking of hundreds of thousands of guns.

Can you imagine people showing up to their local Shopper’s with a dozen rifles to send to the government via Canada Post?

Tony Bernardo, of the Canadian Shooting Sport Association, said in a recent interview that the government has created its own problem and not found a solution.

“What do they do? Send Bob and Ernie to come around to your door, knock on your door and take your prohibited firearms away,” Bernardo said.

He added that most companies in Canada wouldn’t have the scale or ability to do what the government is asking.

As for the price list, Bernardo agreed with Wilson that the government issued list is far too low, that it doesn’t consider what Canadians actually paid for them. Courts in this country don’t look kindly on governments seizing property, legally obtained, without fair compensation.

What we learned over the last week is that the government issued an unrealistic price list for a buyback program that doesn’t exist — even in theory — and that they have already spent millions on.

Does this feel like the start of another billion dollar, or more, boondoggle?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s plan to buy back “assault-style’ guns from law-abiding gun owners will do nothing to solve the real problem when it comes to violent urban street crime in Canada’s major cities.

That is, criminal gangs using illegal handguns smuggled in from the U.S. to terrorize law-abiding citizens.

The Trudeau government knows this.

But as is often the case with the Trudeau government, it seems more interested in appearing to tackle problems through superficial measures like buying back guns from legal gun owners, than taking guns out of the hands of the criminals who use them.

3D-printed 'ghost guns' seized in B.C. Interior after parts intercepted in mail: CBSA
The Canada Border Services Agency says in a statement that officers executed a search warrant in West Kelowna on April 27 in relation to the smuggled firearms parts

Border officers report so-called “ghost guns” made from 3D-printed parts have been seized in the B.C. Interior, after international deliveries were intercepted at mail centres in Vancouver and Toronto.

The Canada Border Services Agency says in a statement that officers did a search in West Kelowna on April 27 in relation to the smuggled firearms parts and discovered a 3D printing machine in the process of printing a handgun frame.

The agency says six completed handgun frames, all without serial numbers, were seized at the property.

CBSA says it searched a property in Lumby the next day and seized a loaded 9 mm handgun with no serial number, nine non-restricted long guns, a prohibited knife, a stun gun and four canisters of ammunition.

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says in a statement that “ghost guns,” which lack serial numbers, pose a “serious risk” because they are easy to make and difficult to trace.

The agency says two men arrested during the raids have been released pending further investigation.

Smuggling firearms into Canada is punishable by a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and a $500,000 fine.

Imagine just for a moment that Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government put as much time, effort and money into tackling gun crime as they do picking political fights with legal gun owners.

Our streets would be much safer and we wouldn’t have constant stories of shootings with people being killed or injured.

Instead, Trudeau’s Liberals like picking fights with legal gun owners because it is easier, gets them great headlines and plenty of praise from a mostly unquestioning media. It makes low information voters think they are doing something to improve public safety when they aren’t.

On Friday, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced that the government was bringing in the ban on importing handguns sooner using a special regulation. This is a temporary measure but one he said was necessary due to the “obstructionist??” Conservative Party.

When the Liberals announced their “handgun freeze” on May 30, they knew that there were less than 10 sitting days left in Parliament. That’s important because some of the regulatory changes they want to bring in are required to be tabled in Parliament and can’t come into effect until 30 sitting days have passed.

That would mean the import ban wouldn’t take effect until October. They couldn’t have that, so they came up with this stop gap measure. Of course, if this was as important to them as they say, they could have tabled these changes in Parliament earlier in the spring and they would be in effect now.

They didn’t do that though because this was a hastily-arranged move to capitalize on the tragedy that was the Uvalde school shooting in Texas. Trudeau knows he can push the gun issue in Canada any time there is a tragedy in the United States.

This measure will not improve safety on Canadian streets in the least. Licensed gun owners are less likely to be involved in crime than the general population and even less likely to be involved in crime than police officers, according to research from criminologist Garry Mauser.

Trudeau’s Liberals have determined though that licensed gun owners are the problem, rather than gangs and criminals who use illegal guns smuggled in from the United States, the real problem with gun crime is the smuggled guns at the border and the Trudeau Liberals are spending more than three times going after people who have been fully vetted by the RCMP and are among the least likely to commit crimes.

Mendicino boasted at his announcement that CBSA agents seized more than double the amount of illegal guns at the border in 2021 compared to 2020. That would be 2020 when the land border was effectively shut down due to COVID.

The whole announcement, their handling of this file, Mendicino calling the Conservatives obstructionist as often as he has lately makes this smell like it’s all part of setting the stage for a fall election. I’m not saying they are absolutely going to trigger a fall election, but I’ve written in the past about why the Liberals might want to go and their handling of this issue only reinforces that.

Gun control isn’t a public safety issue for Trudeau, it’s a vote getter for him and with these announcements, he’s showing that he’s trolling for votes hard even as he lays on a beach in Costa Rica.
