Your need for a violent reaction, even though in a pic, says to me you see a gun as something more than making holes in paper.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic. I used to have a licence to carry when I worked up north in bear country. I also have a friend who hunts that legally carries a sidearm for bear defense. It's much easier and quicker to pull a .45 out from it's holster, aim and shoot a bear that catches you by surprise (or vice versa) than it is to un-sling your rile from your shoulder, level it and get a shot off.
If you are going to kill a bear at close range a 12 gauge with a one ounce slug sounds right to me.
Ideally you would kill it form a distance with a proper rifle for the task.
Using a pistol designed to shoot holes in people or paper is ill advised.

The last whitetail deer I shot ran about 100 feet with a vaporized heart.
Close range with a bear is risky. a repeater might be your best bet.
Don't you get tired of arguing with stupid people? The last whitetail deer I shot ran about 100 feet with a vaporized heart.

When I carried in the bush I used a .44 magnum Ruger Blackhawk which I loaded myself, and i cast the lead myself using the babbit alloy the mill was using for wet bearings on the paper machines, soft enough so as not to damage the lands and grooves of the barrel, but hard enough to penetrate the thick skull of a bear.Yeah.
When he said ".45" I thought I hope he means a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Long Colt, loaded with the heavy, extra power rounds that pistol is designed to handle.
Because shooting at bears with a .45 ACP is just nuts. No sufficient penetrative ability.
Better than throwing rocks, but that is the best that can be said for it.
when I'm in the bush I like to have a shotgun because I can survive with it if I need to. It offers me the ability to kill anything that lives in North America from a small bird to eat to a bear that is after me. I understand that a hunting rifle would be better for the bear killing part from a distance, but it destroys small game. When I carried in the bush I used a .44 magnum Ruger Blackhawk which I loaded myself, and i cast the lead myself using the babbit alloy the mill was using for wet bearings on the paper machines, soft enough so as not to damage the lands and grooves of the barrel, but hard enough to penetrate the thick skull of a bear.

ON the other hand a pistol lets me look cool and kill myself if things get too bad.
rest assured when I do venture outdoors and into the bush it is not with a pistol on my hip - although that is a cool look.It would surprise me if you have ever left your mother's basement.
