Its $2.7 billion price tag is what finally ended the Long Gun Registry, not its failure to improve public safety.

Cost overruns will likewise end the Liberal government’s latest political albatross – its planned gun confiscations – but not before it wastes at least another $2–5 billion of your tax dollars.

The Trudeau government is far more interested in virtue signalling than it is in protecting Canadians. They trumpet their misguided belief confiscating rifles from licensed gun owners will stop gang violence fuelled by the illegal drug trade.

It won’t. It can’t.

“There are handguns all over. They’re all illegal and they’re in the hands of criminals. And the people that legitimately own them, their [guns are] in safes and being taken to gun clubs. The two sections [of society] don’t intersect,” Winnipeg Constable Rob Carverhttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001IcnS...xjHUVsOpDyCoCRavmWkPsOyy9Cg_6ubjpnqKzQTOCLw== told reporters.

“I guess it might make some people feel good, but it won’t change the threat level one iota,” Carver said.

Drug dealers and gang members will still have their guns long after the last “assault-style rifle” is confiscated from its legal gun owner.

Not Enough Police Officers

Prime Minister Trudeau’s Mandate Letter to the Minister of Public Safety, Bill Blair, asked him to:

Amend Canada’s firearms laws to ban all military-style assault rifles, with an
associated buyback program and two-year amnesty;”

This is a far more expensive undertaking than Minister Blair’s estimate of $600 million to confiscate and destroy approximately 250,000 guns.

It also comes with extraordinarily high staffing requirements.

New Zealand set up 524 local collection points (including 43 firearm dealers) to collect 175,000 prohibited guns.[ii]

Canada is 37 times larger in size than New Zealand. Our population is also 8 times larger than the island nation.

Geographically, our land mass suggests 19,388 collection points. If we base collection points on population alone, that suggests a minimum of 4,192 collection points are required.

New Zealand typically staffed each collection point with four police officers and four clerks, according to the Fraser Institute.[iii]

By staffing each collection point to New Zealand’s levels, the government will need 16,768 police officers, assuming a single 8-hour shift per day. If collection points are open longer, this number doubles.

We have a total of 68,563 police officers in Canada according to Statistics Canada.[iv]

If almost 50% of Canada’s cops are yanked away from criminal investigations to staff gun confiscation booths, who’s left to protect Canadians?

We can’t afford to pull 33,536 police officers from their regular duties.

We even can’t afford to pull 25% of Canada’s police officers off those tasks.

The threat to public safety is too high.

If the government diverts police officers away from criminal investigations, court testimony and other efforts that protect the public, criminals will have free rein.

Will these confiscations from licensed gun owners remain popular when costs spiral out of control?

Will they remain popular when the body counts inevitably rise, unchecked by a feel-good program that was never designed to stop the violence in the first place?

Cowering behind another round of expensive virtue signalling can only guarantee more carnage. That’s not how you enhance public safety.

Let’s address these issues head on.

Let’s focus on the real problem – violent drug dealers and gang members shooting, injuring and killing innocent people.

Because if studies were allowed to show which groups were most likely armed the finger would point directly back to the immigration department .

Hey STB- Surely you've learned by now that there are some self centred individuals who discredits everyone's opinion except their own. Ignore them!

But........but...................uh....................

it is kind of fun posting logical and sightful stuff..........................

that completely DIS-ILLUSIONS HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you catch her recent post raging at Our idiot Boy Justin for his FAILING EFFORTS to censor free speech!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That raging Ember sounded ALMOST CONSERVATIVE Minded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the world coming to????????????????

But of course we KNOW that HOGS LOVE Free speech because it is important for them to speak freely......................

about all their ENTITLEMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only real issue with free speech is when the rest of us TALK BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And did you see the latest headlines in our news media???????????????????

The Tynedenaga County at the east end of Lake Ontari-owe - legal eagles got an INJUNCTION entitling them to clear away..............

the Mohawk blockade that is on COUNTY LAND - NOT ON THE RESERVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The main freight and Via lines they are blocking DO NOT ENTER THE RESERVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The local town cops do not have the numbers or firepower to deal with the blockade.......................

so they turned to OPP - and the Ontari-owe Provincial Police selected a nice grandmotherly looking........................

older female constable to go warn the Mohawks that about the court order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After all - it WOULD NOT DO - to send an aggressive MALE cop out there - it MIGHT PROVOKE A CONFRONTATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Granny did the job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And to CAP IT OFF SERGEANT GRANNY GAVE THE MOHAWKS A BOTTLE OF MAPLE SYRUP.............................

as a gift after their little chat was over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes - Maple Syrup - the solution to SO MANY PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And then the OPP went right back to WATCHING - because in their words::::::::

Trying to break up the blockade would be too dangerous"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GUESS WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE HAVE A CONDITION OF ANARCHY IN ONTARI-OWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In other news - Mohawks have repeated their old claim that the Cdn govt HAS NO LEGAL AUTHORITY OVER THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly THAT IS THE CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just look at all the native smoke shacks selling illegal cigarettes...................................

right beside the new and equally unlicensed shops now selling WEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In related news - Do you suppose Our idiot Boy could save his minority govt if he gave out Maple Syrup?????????????????????

A little sugar might help the LIE-beral medicine go down?????????????????

The pipeline mess is reaching a position that Monty Python could not properly RIDICULE or SATIRIZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Northern Ontario,
All that extra punctuation is silly, although years ago I had a notebook on which the comma character didn't work and I used a couple of .... as a pause between words.
That habit was hard to break when I got a new P C.
I still catch myself doing it sometimes.

Canada appears to have finally found its disruptive moment. Petition E-2341, which calls upon “the Government of Canada to put any new firearms laws, bans, buyback programs or changes to licensing before the House of Commons to be debated,” has reached 160,000 at the time of writing - more than any other petition in the history of our country. The results also show a clear contrast regionally, with the most signatures coming from BC, Alberta, and Ontario.

The irony is palpable, especially as the anti-gun petition, calling for the ban of AR style weapons as well as handguns has failed to break 30,000 signatures. Canada, long ruled by the Pearson-Trudeau consensus of post-1967, appears not to be the unarmed, overly polite society we’ve been caricatured as. Apparently, people of this dominion will not stand for an out of touch government that seeks to confiscate their property when they have done nothing to deserve it.

It bears repeating not a shred of gun policy in this country has ever saved a life. Much of it has successfully destroyed small businesses that sell or service guns, or made criminals out of law-abiding owners who fall prey to laws against self-defence as well as paper crimes. But the gangs still run free with illegally obtained firearms. Whatever one thinks of this issue, I can promise you that Canadian gun owners are not giving up their weapons without a serious fight.
Black rifles might look scary to some, but are no more dangerous than other weapons. The idea that they are high-powered is also patently ridiculous: AR-10’s shoot .308 or 7.62mm NATO, a commonly used hunting and target round that is by no means the most powerful; the AR-15 shoots .223 or 5.56mm NATO, a round originally based on the .22LR. Certainly, these are rifles that have been used in warfare by the military - but so were Grampa’s Lee-Enfields.

The term “assault style” is nonsense. Indeed, the AR stands for “Armalite,” the company that first produced these rifles. Why people buy these over those with traditional wooden stocks is the same reason you buy anything new: the convenience of customizability and ergonomics. Any anti-gun advocate, once sat down and shown how much can be done to make AR’s lighter, more accurate, easier to handle, could not honestly dismiss their superiority to older platforms.
There are deep political ramifications to this episode. First, as the Conservative Party of Canada seeks a new leader, those hoping to win the gun-vote must make their stance clear by word, deed, and policy. There is no doubt that gun policy has clear supporters in this country - anyone who wishes to take the helm in a single ballot will have to strongly declare their position.

Second, the Liberals vastly underestimated the resentment such flagrant disregard for private property would inspire. Guns cost incredible amounts of money because they are tools built and fitted together with precision. If there is not a clear about-face, with Justin Trudeau all but apologizing to lawful gun owners, there will be a change in the electoral map of this country.

Most importantly though, while the world churns with populist movements of every stripe and counter-movements of consensus based market neoliberalism or neoconservative foreign interference, Canada appears to have found an entirely principled stance from which to fight back: we, the gun owners of Canada, on behalf of all Canadians, will not be made criminals by fiat. If our rights are to be amended, let them be put to debate in the people’s house: Parliament.

Northern Ontario,
I wondered the same thing.

BTW, I'm deaf as a stump.
I also have hearing loss but not from shooting without ear protection but from working in a paper mill , extremely noisy environment and when I first started there the only type of ear protection was a wad of cotton soaked in oil.
Good ear protection came later!

Yet another LIE-beral ENTITLEMENT discovered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Burned out Ember will only discuss CERTAIN FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that she deems acceptable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Dasleeper agrees with her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why dont you discuss this post among yourselves................................

PUNCTUATE AS YOU DEEM NECESSARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is an article illustrating how truly desperate LIE-berals are to control the media and censor their critics - as LIE-beral hopes for winning another majority govt DIE - and even as their hope for the survival of their minority govt DIMS!! LIE-beral values are being DESPERATELY COMPROMISED over oil and carbon tax SCAMS and the need to win over MORE civil service union HOGS - WITHOUT breaking the bank to give them MORE GRAVY!!!!!

(With some comments of my own in brackets):!

Broadcasting report proposes to wreck the internet with insane hubris and mad regulatory overreach

(AS I have said before Our idiot Boy Justin is an aspiring Soviet Dictator and such people ALWAYS turn to that ugly combination of censorship and self serving propaganda!! LIE-berals have decided the best way to defend their govt is to label ALL their critics as Fake News spreaders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Opinion: The BTLR report proposes to destroy what makes the internet free, popular and innovative and to make it resemble the Canadian broadcasting system

Our priority is to make Canada’s telecommunications industry as fair as possible for consumers, while also ensuring that our companies have the best incentives to make investments into quality networks.

(Yes - as “fair as possible within a framework that ONLY ALLOWS LIE-beral opinion to be published!! WE have seen how CBC used a DISCREDITED AND FALSE and intentionally restrictive interpretation of “fair use policy” to ensure that NO Conservative opinion should ever sully the CBC media!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Navdeep Bains: Canada will lead the world in fast, affordable wireless networks
Time to ‘reinvent’ and rename CRTC, legislative review panel recommends
CRTC's new rules forcing telecoms to cut prices will dampen long-term competitiveness: Report

(Afford ability is one thing - RESTRICTING MEDIA CONTENT ONLY to those comments you LIKE is entirely another affair!! As always LIE-berals HIDE THEIR HATE behind their Fake News!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

By Timothy Denton

How could any group of seven apparently sane and certainly highly educated specialists believe that Canada will legislate into being a system of state control of communications as pervasive, as illiberal and as unfree as what they have proposed in the final report of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Legislative Review (BTLR), which they submitted to the federal government last week? By grossly expanding what is called “broadcasting,” the report’s authors aim at nothing less than a statist counter-revolution against the internet.

(Such a plan is EASY to envision if you are a civil service union HOG - focussed only on defending YOUR ENTITLEMENTS from angry peasants who you believe should be DIS-ENFRANCHISED for their “racist” opinions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The report is a classic case of perceptual blinkers. It sees the internet as “broadcasting,” so everything about the internet is relentlessly squeezed into the conceptual model that a half century of micro-managing Canadian regulation has created for “broadcasting.” When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Or as Einstein said, theory determines what is observed.

(A Half century of LIE-beral sponsorship of CBC propaganda has seen CBC become VIRTUALLY IRRELEVANT to the majority of Cdns - as the steady and precipitous DROP in CBC viewers reveals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Broadcasting may seem to be a technology or a kind of business. It is not; in Canada, at least, it is a legal regime of pervasive regulation and licensing. The BTLR report proposes to wreck what makes the internet free, popular and innovative and to make it resemble the Canadian broadcasting system: tidy, licensed and harnessed to government objectives. The report has already been trashed by my former CRTC colleague Peter Menzies and by the University of Ottawa’s Prof. Michael Geist as mad regulatory overreach, and with good reason. The question is how did the review panel arrive at such insane regulatory hubris?

(The internet as it now exists is a hotbed of PERSONAL OPINION AND EXPRESSION -thus it is the LAST REAL BASTION of free speech!! An average person simply cannot shout down the CBC or Toronto Star - or its LIE-beral loving media pals - all of whom benefited from the SIX HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR LIE-beral media slush fund - created right before our 2019 election - to reward Cdn media - that LIE-berals “TRUST” - to say good things about their failed polices - but the internet offers a chance to rebut media whores who have sold themselves to LIE-berals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The BTLR wants to assimilate the internet to broadcasting. This is not merely a technical fallacy; it is the imposition of a single, obsolete, highly regulated scheme, predicated on the limitations of a particular 20th-century technology, onto a computer-driven, dynamic, innovative and market-propelled global system of communications. It is, I suspect, an attempt to deal with the market power of large platforms like Facebook and Netflix with the wrong tools. But more than anything, it is an unprecedented power grab for the federal government and the CRTC.

(Forget about Netflix and Facebook - the LIE-berals are after a SOVIET STYLE POWER GRAB in hope of improving their re-election chances!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

When thinking about communications, we have two models to choose from: broadcasting and printing. After several political revolutions, the printing system eventually became free of government licensing, while broadcasting remains heavily regulated. Printing needs no prior permission of the government whereas broadcasting is only legal through government licence. Fearsome penalties apply for broadcasting without a licence. Broadcasting is a punitive and restrictive legal regime for securing compliance with a set of national political goals.

(Laws regulating printing appear to HAVE CHANGED!! Rebel Media chief Ezra Levant has been ORDERED to come to Ottawa to be investigated for violating election law by publishing a book critical of LIE-berals during the 2019 election!! In the govt letter ordering Levant to travel from Toronto to Ottawa - on his own time and expense - some clerk QUOTED the election law that Levant is accused of breaking - by refusing to “register” as a third party commentator with LIE-beral govt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(The threatening letter - which details fines for failure to appear as ordered - also contained THIS OVER LOOKED LEGAL GEM: “that books and the promotion of books that are published during elections ARE EXEMPT FROM THE NEW ELECTION LAWS”!! OOPSIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Levant is being OFFICIALLY HARASSED “for publishing a book and promoting a book” during a Cdn election - WITHOUT FIRST seeking LIE-beral permission TO SPEAK ABOUT CDN POLITICS - in spite of LIE-beral law specifically permitting his actions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

In Canada, the broadcasting regulatory system grew into a nationalist response to American cultural dominance. The system embraces its regulated entities (radio, TV and cable) and seeks to channel private and public funds to Canadian program production. It assumes Canadian programming is expensive to produce so American programming has to be restricted and the profits from it channelled into domestic TV production. The broadcasting system assumes the few talk to the many in a largely closed system that can be harnessed for purposes of public policy. The authors of the report are convinced the problem the Broadcasting Act sets out to solve is as relevant and pressing as it ever was. So just as cable television was assimilated into the broadcasting regulatory system back around 1980, so shall the internet be “harnessed” to the Canadian broadcasting system now. In fact, the same lawyer who won the cable system argument back in 1980 in the Capital Cities cases, Peter Grant, now at law firm McCarthy Tétrault, was the principal legal mind behind the BTLR report 40 years later.

(As usual the LIE-beral policy mixes apples, oranges AND RAT POISON in a nasty anti civil rights brew!! LIE-berals CLAIM they want free speech and truly Cdn content in our media -and yet they fund CBC censors - AND ATTACK Levant and his genuinely Cdn content news media - with head office in Toronto!!)
Whether the internet’s greatest feature is innovation without permission or permitting people to speak without permission is an open question. The BTLR recommendations envisage a wholesale transformation of a system of free expression into a government-directed system of licensees. It is boldly statist in its goals. By contrast, a 1997 legal opinion for the Department of Industry simply assumed that what mattered on the internet was the activity and concluded that “no glaring problems have been found that mandate a massive government intervention.” It therefore saw no reason to subject the Canadian portions of the internet to broadcasting regulation.

(That was then - this is the BANKRUPT NOW!! Ontari-owe is now the most indebted province on the planet and the entire country is being burdened with a massive endless series of TWENTY BILLION DOLLAR PER YEAR LIE-beral deficits - being defended by an avalanche of LIE-beral FAKE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(In the last 18 months - over 90 percent of Cdns have seen their provinces and territories elect Conservative minded govts - and Our idiot Boy and his loser LIE-berals have been reduced to a minority govt that is ON ITS DEATH BED- waiting to be put out of its misery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(The cost of the Wuhan Virus and the effect of native pipeline protestors closing rail lines may just be the fiscal straw that prevents LIE-berals from buying enough votes to survive a non confidence vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(And in United States a victorious Trump has easily defeated the LIE-beral hordes who put their faith in impeachment for the simple reason THEY HAVE NO POPULAR POLITICAL POLICY to offer the public main stream - nor do they have the will to devise such policy - that would win substantial numbers of voters away from Trump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(ALL LIE-beral policy is FAILING!! Even their efforts at censorship are failing them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I'm profoundly deaf and have worn aids for decades. My first husband was a drag racer - he raced a Harley Davidson that he'd re-built himself. The guy was a genius with mechanical things - I'll give him that. My job was to pour a bit of bleach in front of his back tire for more traction off the line. No one I knew wore ear protection back then. I still remember the ear-piercing screech of those tires amidst all the back-ground noise of engines revving. My audiologist believes that is where the decline in my hearing began. It continued when I worked around chain saws as a first aid attendant on forestry crews. I was in denial about it for awhile but did manage to get pretty darn good at reading lips. I finally filed a claim with worker's compensation and I do have to say that I have been well-treated by them. I am given every new upgrade that comes on the market and all costs are taken care of by them.
