"Lowest rate of firearm-related homicide in over 40 years, but stabbings increase in 2013"

Homicide in Canada, 2013

Uhoh. We'd better implement knife-control.

There's some interesting reading in that Statscan page.

Some Canadians maybe, but from what I have seen from some of the posters here, when upset, it is recommended to string up people before trial and/or simply shoot them.
rRght boomer?? To heck with a trial, investigation, just do away with all that stuff.

and there are some that would rather see a woman raped then her head smashed in, instead of the criminal stopped by a woman properly trained in lethal self defense with a handgun.

Canadians are smart enough to learn from mistakes of the Americans. Guns need to remain a right, but registrations are must to ensure the accountability of guns used in crimes. Maybe guns should be registered every 3 years to prove the current ownership at any given time? Just thinking out loud here.

Who pays? And why?

Do I have to pay an extra registration fee if the criminal doesn't pay to register his? What happens when he commits a crime? Do they take away my firearm instead?

LOL. Your party I assume. Did you know that if you are caught parking in a handicap place in Quebec without the handicap license, the fine is $250.00 I approve wholeheartedly with that!!.

Why? Homicides by any means is the lowest since 1966!! This is from your own stats.
Stabbings are up but that's ok because the homicide rate is down? So you don't think dying by edged weapons is as bad as ones dying from ones that fire projectiles? Interesting

One of the problems we have in B.C. there are invariably about 10 vacant handicaps spots for every 2 vacant normal spots.
Maybe where you live. Around here even the local township employees like to park plowed snow into the disabled peoples' parking spots. Regular folks are, "Oh, I'll just be a minute", "I have a bad back", etc. IF (and it's a big one) cops catch these buttwipes, they are fined. It doesn't help that freakin MDs will fill out the forms for the disability cards when they have a patient that complains about having an ingrown hair or carpet tunnel (hubby gets pretty inventive at mis-branding things).

Anyways, this is a bit off-topic.

We can have a zillion gun laws, but if they aren't enforced, they're useless. And it's quite surrealistic to think that controlling LEGAL firearms amongst law-abiding citizens will have much of an effect on the criminal element.

Even close up a knife wound is not always fatal, but I suspect a gunshot wound would be.

For goodness sake, don't you think a better response time from 911 should be the priority, not more guns. It took less than five minutes when I called 911 and I live 2 miles outside of a small town, with a population of less than 2000 people.

You are making many naive assumptions about how a knife will be used.

Interesting. You are in favor of a 911 system improving its capabilities, but you are not in favor of a woman improving her own defensive capabilities. What is it that you have against women?

Fun fact. The largest individual killing sprees(mass killings) on the planet required no firearms whatsoever. But that's neither here nor there since gun laws don't really hamper the criminal element anyway.

While I'm not a gun nut or a Canadian version of a 2nd amendment frother, I AM a firm believer in Castle Doctrine. An individual should have the right to at least defend their home/family against intruders using whatever means they deem necessary.

I lived in a town of 1700 people for a while. Police response times were 45 minutes on a good night because the nearest RCMP detachment was 60 km away.

So what's your plan to take millions upon millions of guns off the streets..

The USA and Canada can pass all the laws they want to prohibit guns, I'm never going to give up my firearms.. and I'm not alone in that sentiment.

So if you want my guns.... come and get'em ;)

Not really, remember .....farmer Killed many a chicken in my day, using an axe because like a human it is not all that easy to position them for the perfect stab or slice and penetrating skin and muscles is not all that easy either.

First off I do not want your guns, nor do I care how many you have, as long as you have followed the law governing the licensing, storage, and use of them. Frankly, I don't think Canada has millions and millions of guns on the street do you??

Anyway, if Trump becomes president and builds his 40 foot wall along the US/ Canadian border, it should solve some of the illegal entry of weapons to Canada. LOL All we will have to worry about are our coast lines. Are we so paranoid that we need to erect the same thing along our water fronts.

For those who do not understand irony or sarcasm, I am not serious about the walls.

Nice we have freedom of choice, to either keep guns or not and I approve of the laws we have. I just do not want to see them loosened as some posters here do.

Funny the rest of us want to see the laws we have applied to criminals, not more laws restricting honest taxpayers.

I consider taking "millions upon millions of guns off the streets" an uninformed knee jerk reaction to media sensationalized news. In reality, there are only 2 million licensed gun owners in Canada, their guns are already off the streets.

That is typical uninformed trolling on your part. I bet you haven't seen the whole speech, just the 8 second version.

For one moment, I will agree with you.

Then I will note that firearms murder less people in Canada than these imperfect/difficult-to-use knives that you speak of.
