Republicans have a perennial problem with black voters. Blacks overwhelmingly prefer Democratic candidates. It doesn’t’ matter if the Republican candidate is good or bad, he gets very few black votes. This holds true for a very popular Republican (like Reagan) or a very unpopular one (like Bush).

And Republicans are mystified as to why blacks prefer Democratic Party in such a large number. The answer is pure and simple, racism. Republicans generally tend to treat black people with contempt, with scorn (there are a few notable exception).

The Virginia controversy is but the latest example of such contempt and such scorn. The Republican governor of Virginia issued a proclamation glorifying the Confederate actions in the Civil War. In the process, he was also indirectly glorifying slavery.

Blacks took it big, there were howls of outrage. Now the governor has apologized for not condemning slavery in the proclamation.

But the damage is done. The image of Republican Party as a black hater has been reinforced. Besides, he cannot very well amend the proclamation now, after issuing it.

While some blacks accepted his apology, others were not so forgiving.

“He says the wrong thing, he sends a signal to his base and then he makes an apology," Marsh said, "It's a question of whether or not he's sincere or not."

The governor was clearly trying to appease his far right, racist Republican base. In his zeal to do so, he has set back the relations between blacks and Republican Party by perhaps 50 years.

These occurrences are fairly regular. And then Republicans cannot answer why blacks don’t vote for them in bigger numbers. They don’t want to face the truth, the answer is pure and simple, old fashioned racism.

Incidentally, in recent memory every Republican governor has issued a proclamation glorifying Virginia’s Confederate past, every Democratic governor has refused to do so.

This was a completely avoidable embarrassment for Gov. McDonnell. The choices he had were "Do nothing and still be liked as the winner of the recent gubernatorial election" or "Do something that glorifies the Old Confederacy".

Amazingly, he chose the latter.

But that is what Republicans do time and again, their actions are many times designed to infuriate blacks.

My suggestion is for the Gov. to attempt a "Disney" version of the Old South as a means of attracting tourists to the state. If antone could do so without offending a lot of people,it's the folks at Disney:smile:

The only place worth visiting in the south is Florida. Anything else, forget it.

The irony in all this being that Lincoln was a Republican...

Quite so. Lincoln must be turning in his grave at what the Republican Party has become today. Lincoln went to war with Southern Democrats over the issue of slavery. What will he think when he sees his own party pursuing policies consistently harmful to blacks today.

Especially one of his own party members honoring the confederate cause, something which Lincoln fought bitterly, would be particularly galling to him. After all, he would expect such behavior form Democrats, but not from Republicans.

Incidentally, I think Lincoln would be a Democrat today.

That is no reflection on Republivcans, but a clear indication of the average (or perhaps all) blacks.

"And Republicans are mystified as to why blacks prefer Democratic Party in such a large number. The answer is pure and simple, racism. Republicans generally tend to treat black people with contempt, with scorn (there are a few notable exception)."

And ALL the racism belongs to, owned by and displayed time after time by poverty pimps like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and any and all members of the "black congressional caucus" which in an by itself is an undeniable sign of racism. Imagine the outrage by folks like SirJosephPorter, if there were an attempt by white people to form anything as racist as the Congressional black caucus. Of course, the scorn towards blacks by Republicans is richly illustrated by the FIRST black Secretary of State, the First black Security Advisor, and the first President of the Republican National Commitee. Could the Democrats match that?

Just another hyporbole by a liberal, who would rather die than seeing his precious son date, let alone marry a black girl. Just like all the other liberals. You forgot to mention even a single phrase where slavery was glorified. Unless you deliberately forgot or neglected to mention that slavery in America would have been totally impossible, if it had not been for the stronger black tribes in Africa conquering and selling the weaker black tribes to slave traders, who were black every bit as often as they were whites.

If the Governor apologized, it was not because he was wrong in what he said. He aquisced to the prevailing, insane political correctness.

Once the black (well, at least HALF black) President names a black Secretary of State, a black Security advisor and the President of the Democratic National Commitee is a Black person, the racism that you so roundly condemned is owned and displayed by the Democrats only. And let us not forget that the oh so tolerant and loving Democrats label every black person who has the gall to be Republican an Uncle Tom, a white-wanna-be and this includes those blacks who have the unmitigated nerve to speak proper English.

An apology that is not accepted is not a reflection on the person that offered an apology. It is a reflection on the small-minded to whom an apology is only accepted if the "offender" is dead.

All this ranting and raving doesn’t answer the basic question I posed. If Democrats are racist and Republicans aren’t, why do blacks vote overwhelming Democratic? Are the blacks stupid, dumb in your opinion? What?

There are only two explanations. One is that Republicans are racist, and no doubt many of them are. Others (like you) think that blacks are too stupid, too dumb to recognize where there interests lie (namely, with Republican Party). Either way, most Republicans treat blacks with contempt and scorn.
