Republicans have a perennial problem with black voters. Blacks overwhelmingly prefer Democratic candidates. It doesn’t’ matter if the Republican candidate is good or bad, he gets very few black votes. This holds true for a very popular Republican (like Reagan) or a very unpopular one (like Bush).
And Republicans are mystified as to why blacks prefer Democratic Party in such a large number. The answer is pure and simple, racism. Republicans generally tend to treat black people with contempt, with scorn (there are a few notable exception).
The Virginia controversy is but the latest example of such contempt and such scorn. The Republican governor of Virginia issued a proclamation glorifying the Confederate actions in the Civil War. In the process, he was also indirectly glorifying slavery.
Blacks took it big, there were howls of outrage. Now the governor has apologized for not condemning slavery in the proclamation.
But the damage is done. The image of Republican Party as a black hater has been reinforced. Besides, he cannot very well amend the proclamation now, after issuing it.
While some blacks accepted his apology, others were not so forgiving.
“He says the wrong thing, he sends a signal to his base and then he makes an apology," Marsh said, "It's a question of whether or not he's sincere or not."
The governor was clearly trying to appease his far right, racist Republican base. In his zeal to do so, he has set back the relations between blacks and Republican Party by perhaps 50 years.
These occurrences are fairly regular. And then Republicans cannot answer why blacks don’t vote for them in bigger numbers. They don’t want to face the truth, the answer is pure and simple, old fashioned racism.
Incidentally, in recent memory every Republican governor has issued a proclamation glorifying Virginia’s Confederate past, every Democratic governor has refused to do so.
