Now we are moving on to China? OK. I condemn China's human rights record. I am against the death penalty, and locking up political dissidents. China's criminal justice system is archaic and needs a major overhaul. I can't claim to know what it would it be like to be responsible for 1.5 billion people. But I am aware that making too many changes, too fast could lead to political instability and anarchy. Whenever China becomes unstable, millions of people die either by famine and disease or political purges. So I support China's gradual and cautious efforts to become a more free and open society. I support the direction they are going, not where china is right now.
No one can deny that Chinese people have far more rights and freedoms than they had 20 years ago and I fully support China's current direction.
No one can deny that the US (and to some degree Canada) has become more authoritarian since 9/11. We have lost rights and freedoms. Canadians and Americans can be locked up indefinitely without a trial or the right to see the evidence or in some cases even know the charges. All our governments need do is accuse someone is a terrorist and they loose all their rights. I disagree with the direction taken by Canadian and US leaders leaders regarding the erosion of our rights and freedoms.
Effectively as China opens up and become more like the West, the West is becoming more like China...

Save yourself some time, go look for the results of a vote from the general public where they voted to establish a country called Canada. You don't have to separate from something that was never joined.
It used to only take a few signatures on a petition before that topic had to be 'settled' by a vote by individual voters'. In an electronic age you could do that with just a photo ID tied to a ATM card rather than each vote being hugely expensive. UN voting could be done the very same way, rather than one vote from Canada there were several million voters and that determines the stance Canada has on some aspect of world affairs. That eliminates pressure/corruption in the back rooms.
Not really, what it would create is an economy of votes. Sell your user id and password to the highest bidder. Corruption would flourish.
