info on the internet ( assuming no cancel culture) has a level playing field - just look at the viral (meme vid podcast ) phenomenon.

In a perfect world yes, but we don't live there do we?
Cancel the crooked military industrial /pharma/ banker/money laundering/ derivative/ debt based currency complex, and the religious fanatics from all sides and we could get pretty close

Why not allow publicly traded companies to sink or swim without government assistance?
Excellent question. Why pour taxpayer money into, or forego tax revenue from, businesses that are not viable? Probably a question worthy of its own thread. Or to bring it closer to the topic of this thread, how do you feel about financially healthy corporations accepting COVID relief funds while laying off employees, but still keeping up dividend payments to shareholders ?

I agree the system could be running a lot better, but realistically how do we push it into a different direction? If we could do it without violence in the streets that would be nice.

That does bring us back to the point of a need to be able to verify a sources integrity. A tool as powerful as the internet is not going to go unnoticed by those not weighed down by things like honesty and social responsibility, and the more money at stake the more sophisticated the attempts at manipulation.

The government is not viable. They scrutinize private industry and then dump billions into non productive public sector initiatives.

Maybe that's something that needs attention then. Like Alberta's oilsands. Premier Kenney has no problem holding his hand out to Ottawa for pipelines, or cutting cheques to help the struggling energy sector, if the sector is no longer viable shouldn't it be left to the mercy of the market?

Due diligence - or homework we used to call it: I blame school.

So tiny media outlets don’t deserve government funding because they only reach a small audience , but large publicly traded companies deserve government funding because they are Torontocentric and reach a large audience . Gotcha .
Sounds like Prem Watsa and his Canadian Press friends. Dirt bag billionaires.

Fairfax Financial CEO Prem Watsa claims to champion anti-Black racism. So why is his company bankrolling bail insurance?

The ACLU and Color Of Change have called on Watsa to immediately exit the predatory bail insurance industry in the United States, which disproportionately impacts communities of color, prolonging incarceration for those who cannot afford bail, and trapping others in cycles of debt...

wow BD, good observation there!

I'm speaking hypothetically here, why not have a publicly funded news outlet on both sides of the political spectrum. The right is always crying to get rid of the CBC, why not level the playing field and give them an outlet they don't have to cry about ? You could even split CBC down the middle and have CBC Left and CBC Right ? It's stupid to think that every little backwater outlet should be in line for government funding, they're a business let them survive on their own. You'd need an outlet large enough to take on the load of being a national voice and that leaves "tiny media outlets" out of the running. A new right-leaning public outlet would have be completely funded by public funds. Being independent of pressure from shareholders is what public radio is all about, not having to be ratings whores and free to report as they will. The important thing is credibility. Lots of Conservatives criticize the CBC because of their editorial opinions, but they report the news truthfully. I'd be okay with one equally credible national outlet that leaned to the right. The key word there is credible.
I like C.B.C. for the reliability of their news!

Well JLM, some of us have been pretty careful digging up facts and from what I can see from the unavoidable youtube display of msm ( who ought to all be barred from there for fakenews(!!!), instead of all the truth tellers they have banned ), is that they are not on the same page as our facts are.

It sure as hell can sustain itself if the scales are not being manipulated by a Gov. that wants to do away with it
