Is this a new thing? I swear I've seen it at least a dozen times over the last month or so.

I'm no expert, but doesn't it cost more in gas to turn off/ then on your engine?

The massive potholes on my city roads are another story.

Northern Ontario,
You know you’re in Northern Ontario when you see at least a dozen pickup trucks in the winter, idling in the Canadian Tire parking lot , while the drivers are inside shopping!

Rental car I had in Germany last month turned itself off as soon as I took it out of gear at a stop.

SOme green bean that knows nothing(isn't that a coincidence?) thought this is a good way to save the environment. Maybe, if you are stuck in a traffic jam for hours. Otherwise not only are you burning more fuel you are causing excessive wear on many parts. It is a good idea to slip into neutral if stopped for more than 30 seconds.

Hybrids do that automatically. The engines run to re-charge batteries but they don't sit and idle. When you stop, the engine stops. When you start, the engine may restart, depending on the charge status of the batteries.

The only time I turn off my car when stopped is at a train crossing (specifically on 50 St in Edmonton). If you get caught it's usually a 10 minute + wait for the train to make up its mind on which way it's going LOL

the new civic hybrid gets 55 mpg (allegedly) and has programming to make it simulate the gas driven sluggishness that most driver want for whatever reason.

The gas engine charges the batteries, running most of the time. I believe it only delivers power to the wheels in certain situations.

It can't deliver power to the wheels. The engine is battery charger. You'd need a hypersophisticated drive train to accept the output from two separate power sources and why would you bother?

That's it? I drove my daughter's pure gasoline 2010 4 banger Fusion and got 48mpg @ 120 kph between here and Winnipeg a couple weeks back.

Auto shut off is a new feature on lots of models. Get used to it.
