Do Catholic Universities violate Muslims' 'human rights'?

That actually doesn't answer my question. You'd think it would, but private schools receive public funding in some places.

I agree. I don't know the answer to the question, but if it does receive public funding, then definitely it should be required to accommodate students of all religions.

If it received public funding it should only be required not to prevent religious practice (within reason: no prayer time in the hallways; it's a fire hazard). It shouldn't provide any religious services whatsoever, including special places set aside for prayer.

I don't know about American universities, but at least here most campuses have an organization set up to facilitate student hobbies. It's call the student union. Religious students can indulge in their hobby by forming a club and renting space for their club activities.

If it receives no public funding, then the Muslims are **** outta luck. There are US laws requiring private businesses to provide certain services to customers: like toilets or wheelchair access. But there aren't any laws that say a business must provide religious services to all if it provides them to some.

Freedom of association guarantees them the right, here in Canada at least, to get together and worship however they see fit, just perhaps not facilitated by the university. And I doubt the lawyers would have anymore luck finding a religious college here that is willing to sterilize rooms of any religious oconography to suit other religions, no matter what someone thinks about public funding, etc.

How did you know? You really are on top of your game today.

What the heck are they doing in a catholic University in the first place? Of course there will be Catholic icons all over the place. That is what the church does. Either Colpy is right - they are there to subvert the institution - or - the University has superior educators to any Muslim schools.

As was uncovered rooting around further in the articles, the students themselves haven't launched the suit, and the person launching the suit hasn't even heard from the students.

If a person enters a "Catholic University", then they have to know that they are going to be surrounded by Catholic Religious Symbols.

This lawsuit is just another example of misuse of the Courts.

Sort of the same thing happened at a Catholic University in Massachusetts. The university put Crosses in the classrooms and labs and people who weren't Catholic claimed their "rights" were being trampled.

Private university. Enough said.

This lawsuit is just another example of misuse of the Courts.

And they will lose.

Other religions and sub sects of Christianity have been trying to chisel away at the Catholic dominance for millenia. Why hold the Muzzies back from their piece of the pie too?

Oh they can whine as much as they want. But whining didn't get them far at Boston College. In fact they put a brand new statue of St. Ignatius up shortly after. That must have really got them going.

What if it is only funded by Catholics? I haven't read many posts here - just came on line and have not seen the thread before but - it could be being "publicly" funded by Catholic businesses. If so - that may give them the right to run the school as they see fit. Just a thought.

They absolutely have the right to put up Crosses and whatever else they choose. It is a private school.
