Do Canadians lack confidence?

I came across an article today on Yahoo news ( Does Canada Day need a name change? - Yahoo! Canada News )
about changing the name of Canada Day. This reminded me of the debate we had during the Olympics about changing the lyrics of our anthem to make it more pleasing to others. What is it with Canadians, our news outlets and our politicians that would make them think the public should even waste their time with issues such as this?

Non-issue. Call it Canada Day, Dominion Day, Maple Leaf Day, Silver Birch Day, Beaver Day, Gaga Googoo Day, and a rose by any other name will smell jut as sweet.

Same with the Canadian national anthem. Heck, we have four official anthems already: the English and French versions of the national anthem, and the English and French versions of the Royal Anthem. And make no mistake about it, neither is an exact translation of the other. Sing whichever you want, and it changes nothing.

Simple solution: de-officialize the national anthem and the Royal anthem, de-officialize Canada day, and let people call it and sing it as they like.

From what I read, ansutherland, it was Yahoo (not Canadians or politicians) that decided to ask the question and Canadians who responded with a resounding NO. It was Yahoo who thought the name lacked ' a certain flair' - whatever the heck that means. For pete's sake, it is Canada's BD we celebrate, so of course it should be called - Canada Day. :canada:

I think we as a Country need to stop acting like wimps when it comes to everyone else on the outside.

stop giving in and listening to people's whining.

Our country is great! ya, sure we have some problems but what country doesn't?

would you rather be like the USA and have all the problems they have? and the history that they've had?

2 assassinated Leaders, racial problems, Civil War over Slavery, Nuclear weapons? being hated by most foreign countries to the point where many travelling American Citizens lie and say they're Canadian?

incredible debts because they love to give money to people?

I'm sure I can go on.

Let's be happy that we are Canadian and that we have what we have! Despite what Those Americans say, THIS IS!! the best Country in the World!

It was already changed from Dominion Day to Canada Day long ago. Reporters and any type of media love to stir up crap. I'm sure it was a question put out there by someone whose brain was turned off for the day.

We could change the name to TAX FREEDOM DAY since this is about the time we have finished paying taxes for the year. That at least is something to celebrate.

I'd reply with my own insult.. but I don't stoop to the level of my for lack of better words , silly people..
You were the one demonstrating what many perceive as our insecurity by having to make a slap at Americans, so why are you getting angsty that someone called you on it? Americans and Canadians aren't the only ones who believe they live in the best country in the world...

Was it not arrogant saying that Canada was the best country in the world? I know when an American says that it is considered arrogant.

"but I don't stoop to the level of my for lack of better words "- I could not agree more with this statement... I think.

Indeed he is. This was about Candians lacking confidence and this guy does what many do...rip into the Yanks. Everyone knows that it is insecure people who bring down others to make them feel better about themselves.

Besides... you already did insult.

Pretty funny when you consider Chiligon got his/her panties twisted on a football thread and posted...

"that's pretty pathetic, comparing the province of Saskatchewan with Pakistan.. don't you have any respect for people? or places?"

Somebody should report her/him

what, can I help it if I see that the USA for all it's glory and power and everyone figuring the USA is it, and nobody else matters... that they have too many numerous problems for us to count?

Overpopulation, crime, lack of Health care, huge Debt, and so on..

Canada may not have 300 Million people.. and we don't spend money like it's growing on trees but it's safer, cleaner, healthier, cheaper to live here.. and we're not afraid to go travelling to other countries in fear that we'll be harassed by their people.

I'd much rather live in a country where in between cities there are miles of fields and trees and clear skies and fresh air.. then (in places like California, New York.. Eastern Coast.

it's nothin but houses and buildings and people and population.

Yes I know there are places in the USA that have open spaces..

but you look at states like Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico.. and other states.. they get a lot of their fresh water from Canada.

you're the last person who should be saying anything here.

insulting the fine folk from Saskatchewan by comparing them to Pakistan..

I really don't have a lot of good things to say about the USA to be honest.

but I find their attitudes and feelings towards other countries pretty sickening.

No, Not all Americans but there are a lot of them who when you hear them talk about other countries, their people.. they sound very ignorant and uneducated.

get a life!..

seriously now, that's very insulting to the people of Saskatchewan! the only reason you can get away with this and not get your face punched in is because you're sitting behind a monitor. I dare you to go up to some guys in a Bar in Saskatoon or Regina and call them that a few times..
