This soot as you call it was enough to cover south Manhattan to a layer an inch thick. People were covered in it. There was enough to even cover over the Brooklyn bridge.
By the way, the fires were going out at the time of that explosion. Most of the initial explosion from the aircraft was on the far side of the building and on the outside. There wasn't enough burning up there to account for that much of your "soot". In fact, it was fine dust. Huge amounts of it.
