Well, as an Albertan, I remember the man who declared economic war on my home, in the name of pandering to his base (the N.E.P.). He was also the one who created the debt and deficits, that Liberal revisionists love to try and hang on Mulroney. He strained friendships with our traditional allies and trading partners while trying to cozy up to the USSR (which won't be something worry of reproach to many on the leftist fringe who like to ignore that the USSR was every bit as repressive as any regime in history and openly sought to export their philosophy, forcefully and otherwise). His constitutional attempt was outright refused by Quebec and today some premiers say they would not have signed the document if they had known how the feds would try to use it to usurp provincial jurrisdictions (Lougheed being one). Oh yeah... I guess I'm just a Conservative nutjob hater because I remember the Liberal Icon for actions like these and for flipping off western Canadians...

Meanwhile the current government whose base is in the west is now getting closer to China-just as repressive as the USSR and cheating Newfoundland out of their oil money too. They also have created quite the deficit. Amazing the similarities.

I don't know Trudeau. I was too young to give a hoot. But, to me, Dominion Day sounds wrong. It sounds ominous, somehow. Canada Day is perfect. But, some people will find an excuse to complain about just about anything.

Albertan's wanted the oil wealth to themselves and Trudeau wanted to disperse it amongst all of Canada, tsk tsk shame on Alberta.

Why should Alberta's wealth be singled out to be shared, and not BC's, Ontario's or Quebec's? Why didn't this grand equalization strategy extend across other industries? It was a usurpation of a provincial perogative that was not just or fair by any measure... and it cost people in Alberta jobs, businesses and homes. This is why the Liberal Party is such poison in Alberta and probably will be for a long time to come.

As far as straining relationships, he created better relationships with foreign countries and gave us much more credibility internationally and didn't make us look like Amerikkkan puppets... Easiest the greatest leader of the western world.

Improved relationships with who? 3rd world nations he sent aid to while he bankrupted the country he was supposed to be governing? If this is your definition of the "greatest leader of the western world", then give me the worst because I don't want and can't afford your idea of best.

Actually the trend to get closer to China was started long ago, and Harper's Conservatives have been the party most critical of the Chinese record of human rights and abuses, in memory. I'd love to see you explain how the feds are cheating the Newfs... and this deficit was at the behest of a minority parliament, created amidst opposition cries for more stimulus spending, and as a result of a far worse financial crisis than Trudeau had to deal with. Harper and his crew aren't A-students in my book but they're no Liberal Party of Turdeau.

We're no longer a Dominion. Haven't been for decades. Perhaps we should've scrapped the holiday all together and made April 17th Canada Day-seeing as that's when the constitution was finally brought home.

Which has got bugger all to do with nothing! When we celebrate a birthday, we are celebrating the day we were born, Canada was "born" a Dominion.

Dominion has a ring of subservience to me. I don't know the etymology of the word, but it looks similar to domination. Who's dominating whom? The British Empire over Canada? The federal government over the people?

Republic, on the other hand, has a much better ring to it and an etymology any democrat can can get behind.

Yup. Dominion was a term used by the Birts and our Emperor.

Well, I was born a baby and when I celebrate my birthday I don't call it a baby day. In fact, even when I was still a baby, I doubt my parents called it that.

Though I like to call it the anniversary of my birth because I'm obnoxious like that. You only have one birthday, you know. All subsequent celebrations are anniversaries :p

I disagree, but have a happy Dominion Day.

Don't be a serf! It'll just get you places you don't want to be.

Are you going to the park tonight to sing Rue Britannia or God Save the Queen while watching the fireworks?

We are no longer part of the empire.

I pointed out to hubby that Toronto Dominion bank changed its name when it moved into the US, and just goes by TDBank down there.

are semantics THAT critical??? Sounds like 'much ado about nothing"...

Happy CANADA DAY. :canada: One can read just about anything into words... but that does not mean it is true or a fact.

It's always been Canada Day for me. I imagine I probably feel the same way about changing the name as many did when it changed from Dominion Day to Canada Day.
I remember Dominion Day - and learning from textbooks that spoke of the ports of Manchester. I remember some that made a distinction between Indians and Red Indians too. I remember The Maple Leaf Forever followed by God Save the Queen. But then, I'm older than dirt. Somewhere in some multicultural meleé Canada got politically correct. That wasn't an American thing. Somewhere, we lost an identity.

This thread is a good example of conservative crazies trying to find any dumb reason to hate Trudeau but I can't remember a PM in recent memory who gave a damn more about the country than him... I think you guys hate Canada actually, maybe you should move to Amerikkka.
Or maybe England, since you still apparently want to still be under their dominion..

I can't remember a politician in Canadian history that screwed the west more to curry favor in Quebec and Ontario than Trudeau. His one finger salute spoke volumes about how he viewed B.C.

What really bothers me is that except for the possible exception of Martin successive Liberal leaders got even worse.

Thanks, EagleSmack, and since I'll be busy for the next few days, so let me wish you a Happy 4th of July now.

DITTO that comment. Happy Canada day to fellow Canadians and a HAPPY July 4 to the US contingency. May it be special in many ways.
