"Obamaphobe would mean someone scared of Obama, which does seem to fit most of these...."

Sorry, TenPenny, but "phobe" means "hate" not "fear of".

Any dictionary in print or on the internet would confirm that.

Wrong, Yukon Jack. Look up the word ‘phobia’ in the dictionary. It means irrational, illogical fear of something.

Thus, an Obamaphobe would be somebody who is afraid of Obama. I imagine that would be even a weirder psychosis that somebody hating Obama.

Thus, homophobia means fear of gays. That is why homophobes; gay bashers don’t like the word homophobia. They don’t mind admitting that they hate gays, but they don’t want to admit that they are afraid of gays.

Nothing to do with liberals or conservatives, it is that it has never happened before in United States history.

Ironsides, so what? Just because it has never happened before, that is necessarily a bad thing? You people never elected a black president before either, was that also a bad thing (well, I suppose it is, if one I s a conservative).

Yup we elect our first African-American President and he bows down.

Great... just great.

How many years have "African-Americans" been accustomed to bowing?
How many Arabs will ever be President?
Maybe there is a much broader pro-US statement in a "black" President's bow....
You only see insult if you want to see insult.

Further White House releases will be available as they are issued.

Yukon Jack, again, who cares? It is only the rabid Obama haters who seem to be obsessed with this thing.

And the rabid Obama worshipper that is countering just about every post defending his pathetic bow.

Hardly greeted with a yawn! You're helping it to keep at the top of the forum

Eagle, I disagreed with picking apart the minutia of Bush's time in office too. The 'you bashed Bush' stuff only goes so far in a conversation, and another 4 years of it will get old pretty quickly.

What it boils down to is should the potus (any of them), tailor their mannerisms to be diplomatic? If you think diplomacy is not a part of their job, then I think you've missed a lot.

Thank you, Karrie: this sums up my opinion of this thread.

We can argue about the necessities of one head of state bowing to another but I don't see how a sign of respect to your host is ever a bad thing. While Americans may have a distrust/dislike of royalty and its trappings, these little things, paying attention to some small nuances and being willing to make some small steps in areas that don't matter may help convince others that there is a sincere respect and willingness to work with others on international problems, be they in the middle east, the Korean peninsula or elsewhere. Like it or not, the Bush Administration did squander a lot of international good will and this is a really cheap way to start getting some back.

Obama may or may not be much of a president in the long haul but building friendly relationships with other countries isn't a negative thing and thus far, on a personal basis it appears to be something the Obamas are doing quite well with. That people seem to need to poke at this as a weakness is unbelievable.

Indeed. That is what I have been saying all along, Wulfie. It doesn’t hurt to be polite.

This is quite a contrast from Bush, with his shoot from the hip; shoot first, ask questions later style. Bush made plenty of enemies, he (and because of him, USA) was disliked over most of the world.

Obama is trying to undo some of the damage done by Bush, so of course we would expect the right and the far right to bear down hard on him.

That people seem to need to poke at this as a weakness is unbelievable.

That is how the right wing nut jobs operate. They (the extremist nut jobs, the ones who adulated Bush) understand only one language. I got a gun, and you ain’t.

It means both. From dictionary.com...

"A strong fear, dislike, or aversion."

Had you bothered to look it up instead of posting your usually uninformed "opinions", you would have seen that.

What is it about Conservatives and American president ranch.

Mulroney loved Reagan's ranch and Harper Bush's ranch.

Is it a possibility that our Conservative Prime Minister is having a hard time adjusting to the President Obama because he has no ranch.

What the heck did they do at the ranch and why did they always want to go back.

Northern Ontario,
Some people keep saying that bowing to your host is OK........
Wasn't the host country England and isn't Queen Elizabeth the "official" host? not the King Of Saudi Arabia....? Nods to the Queen, Bows to another "guest"
Now quit making lame excuses for a definite "faux pas" in Protocol....
Some of the people here sound like Obama aides with their "spin" and excuses with everything he does wrong....sheesh....

The leader of a country who happens to be visiting another country following the country's traditions is simply using diplomacy. It's done a lot. Get used to it because it won't change. Leaders shake hands, bow to each other, offer gifts, etc. It happens. I agree with Mr. Wolf .... people are making a mountain of a molehill.

;-) Learned it the hard way.... Good thing a P bass covers much.

Michelle touched Queenie. Queenie snarled at the Italian PM. Harper almost missed out on the group shot because he was doing some "paperwork" (nice to know he wiped!) and Uncle Sam is worried about the new kid's flub?

Damn, I wish folks could step out of the soap opera world....

Earlier in this thread I have almost been accused of being an American:lol:

I'm trying to make sure I don't come across as a left wing American....
