I think she was pretty much completely out of touch with reality, and had almost no political smarts.

But that's my opinion only, not backed up by an opinion poll or Microsoft, or even an old copy of Reader's Digest from when Bennett Cerf was the editor.

Kim sunk herself when she made the comment that elections were not the place for difficult policy discussions - words to that effect -

Stated - Canadians are dumb - maybe she was Right - Chretien and the lemmings came to power.

And he took the lead on South Africa and Apartheid - the GST was a no brainer - it works - business wise - and the suckers believed Chretien when he said he would repeal it - Lemmings - to many freaking lemming allowed to vote and procreate -

Goober, I don’t think Chrétien ever had any intention of repealing GST, he promised that because that is what the voters wanted to hear. Every politician makes a few promises like that, the ones which he has no intention of keeping. In that respect, Chrétien was no different from others.

I don’t think anything she said would have made any difference, the party was going to lose. The only question was, how badly.

Only in that she was new to the Federal game, she had just jumped from the small pond (B.C.) to the big pond, and still feeling her way but on the plus side she wasn't steeped in the corruption YET. I think in politics you have to have fiscal smarts to succeed, most of the rest can be delegated to your ministers, but if you have no money smarts you are going to go down to defeat eventually. AS much of a disgusting creature as Gordon Campbell can be he understands money, which is good for about 8 out of 9 lives. Kim Campbell understood money.

That makes him a liar plain and simple
Anything else is just more b.s.
And if lieing is part of politics it is no wonder participation is falling in each election.
Is that what we want?
Not me.

Show me an honest politician and I'll show you a railroad bum.....

Chretien was probably about as close as you'd get. His biggest problem was the Peter Principle finally caught up to him. Tough old bugger, didn't take any crap.

Rene Levesque: he would tell you to your face that he was about to screw you. And he wasn't lying.

I think Kim could have been a good Prime Minister, she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She had a very rare combination among politicians, common sense, intelligence and honesty. The chance of a politician having any one of those things is 1/1000, so you don't run across someone with all three every day.
I think so, too. I also think the majority of Canucks were bloody stupid not to give her a chance. But, there's nothing new under the sun in that respect.

She had not just jumped into Ottawa politics, JLM. I remember she was the Minister of Health when Mulroney was trying to get his controversial abortion bill through the Parliament (which he did not succeed), so she was around in Ottawa politics for quite a while before she ran for party leadership. She had the job of shepherding the abortion bill through Parliament.

It makes him nothing of the sort; almost every politician lies to some extent. Are you saying that your Messiah has never lied?

For the most part, Chrétien/Martin remained faithful to the Red Book. But most important of all, Chrétien promised to fix the economy, get it out of the horrendous ditch that Mulroney had put it in, and delivered on the promise.

So a little bit of lying is expected from every politician. I remember your Messiah reneging on the promise about income trust legislation, or not running a deficit (I think he did promise not to run a deficit).

Indeed, people do cut politicians a bit of slack when it comes to election promises. I remember when Chrétien refused to get rid of GST; there was a public outcry against Sheila Copps for breaking her promise. So she resigned her seat and sought reelection. She won the reelection easily.

It may come as news to you, but there is no Jesus or Gandhi in politics, not even in your beloved Conservative Party (unless you think that your Messiah comes close).

Lying is one thing- telling untruths for personal gain- that is reprehensible and should result in automatic and immediate dismissal, with no benefits, no pension, f**k all, BUT there are times due to unforseen changes (such as the recession we are in), where only a very stupid politiician would stick to the course orginally laid out. When making plans and promises you can only do so taking into account existing conditions. Maybe a really smart politician would set up a rainy day fund and inpose an additional tarriff, not to go into general revenue but to be invested in a public trust, with full regular accounting and reporting. I don't suppose for a minute that Harper is above lying, but I doubt if it's all "damn lies".

Not too long, S.J., in late 1986 she was a contestant here for leadership of the Social Credit Party, ultimately won by the illustrious Bill Vanderzahm.

I believe that Jesus Christ spread the message of truth.
If you believe lieing is acceptable you have a problem.

No pgs, if you think that most politicians don’t lie (at least to some extent), then YOU have a problem. And as to Jesus Christ, well by now you probably know what I think of him. But that is a subject for a separate thread.

Being anti liberal does not make one conservative, only anti liberal.
I do cast my vote for any person or party that bold face lies.
Glen Clark and his famous wriggle room speach turned me squarely away,
from b.c. ndp.
Cretins gst nafta and other lies combined with the theft of moneys by Quebec libs turned this once proud liberal into anything but.
