That puts a whole new twist on crop dusting.

And, no, I haven't been out on the prairies for 40 years. BTW, hemp is a nitrogen fixer, annually renewable and can produce food, oil, superior plastic, fabric, paper and building materials out of one crop. Why are we not growing it commercially?

Aren't we?

I don't know about you, but I have a container of hemp seed in my fridge, I often have hemp butter there as well. I have assorted cosmetics with hemp in them. Where do you think it's all coming from?

So if they're not plastic to begin with, the break up into plastic after?

We're talking about plastic biodegradeable shopping bags. They are plastic to begin with. Are you having trouble following the topic?

Hey, I didn't make it up. Rolls of bags are sold as biodegradable. So then they're not plastic? I dunno. What would they be? Maybe the bag producers are lying to us. Can't see a corporation doing that.

I'm in total agreement with the proposition that plastic bags get chopped up and last probably forever, drifting around in the water, or strangling earthworms in a landfill.

Add this to the stuff going to float over from Japan, and the land mass of BC could double................land mess?

What does 'biodegradeable' mean when it's used to describe plastic bags?

Can you answer that question?

It means that the plastic will break down into small bits of plastic.

I suppose there is validity in both sides of the argument, granted cars are less polluting but we are driving more miles today and own more vehicles to do it. Today T.V. sets are turned on "24-7" in the 50s maybe 3 or 4 hours a day and just one in the house not 2 or 3 plus 2 or 3 computers, monitors etc.

Actually I belive the perpetual TV has been common for quite some time. In the 40s and 50s it was the radio that was left on most often, but I do recall cases in the 60s where the TV came on at 7:am and stayed on until 10:00 pm. But you are right about computers. There are five in my house and it is common to have three on simultaneously. Mind you, the computer is cheap entertainment, and probably pollutes less than going out to a film or restaurant.

The way I understand it if the plastic bags are made from plastics refined from raw materials like straw and so on then they break down into harmless organic compounds in much the same way leaves decay.

The only thing green about being green is someone sucking u in to give them some of your green.

There is a lot of truth in that statement for sure. Going off track slightly a lot of people are sucked in to paying mega bucks for organic produce, the truth being the taste may be slightly better but the nutrition is exactly the same. A carrot is a f**king carrot.

There is so much talk of the cost and subsidization of renewable energy. The fact is that the subsides to fossil fuels worldwidw are more than five times that amount. In 2010 they amounted to $400 billion, mostly to oil and gas. The OECD countries alone gave between $45 billion and $75 billion.

The rationale for this has always been that it is to alleviate the cost to the poor. But, less than 20% of the amount reaches the poor. It is another shift of wealth and wage to the rich.

Here is a page of lonks within the International Energy Agency. Take your pick as to which piece of evidence you choose.

All the subsidies are for the consumer. Nice try.

A link?!?! Holy Moly! Should I read it or frame it? ;-)
You could try reading. You could try to stop pretending that I do not give links where required and read the ones I have given. Because one person made that claim is not a reason for the rest of you to discard the evidence of your eyes.

No they are not. In Canada alone, the amount is close to $2.5 billion. The Agency identifies no less than 250 mechanisms that amount to subsidy. From Royalty manipulation to various tax measures. That is direct to the industry.

You could try not to take yourself so seriously. Note "winky" guy? That's an indication of jest - except to humourless and dour individuals who nobody takes seriously or their heads will explode.

I never take myself seriously. I do take serious subjects seriously. I know what you intended - or think I do; but this is a constant refrain from some who are not jesting.

That does irritate me since it is just an excuse for not putting the intelligence to work. I just cannot believe that they are so incapable of reason that they do not favour its use.

There are zero subsidies in Canada.

I know you're trying to be funny, but....

I compost
I make my own cleaners
I up cycle and free cycle (look them up if you're unclear on how that saves me green and saves landfills)
I use cloth wherever possible over disposable things....this includes napkins, grocery bags. But I try to make sure I reuse fabric to make things. No use clogging a landfill right?
I shop at goodwill first for clothes....why buy new and add to market pressure if there are perfectly good clothes already waiting?

None of these are for the purpose of parting me from my green....true environmentalism (probably more aptly known as being cheap) can't be bought

I just remembered something, some people extreme do-gooders,said they recycle everything apparently even kleenex filled with snot dirty diapers, which they stupidly put in with "recyclable" which contaminate a truckloads causing it to go directly to landfills.

Either we throw everything away or we "try" to recycle but thanks to some jerks, sometimes its all for nothing.

I spose the little things help in a little way,I tend to look at these things in a much bigger way I guess.Like how a $30.00 computer chip in a fleet of haulers will cut their fuel consumption 10% and lower their emmisions as they now burn a better mixture, just an example but that green savings is worth about as much as a billion garbage bags.

I;m not a big consumer of anything, just enough to get by and enjoy life.

I allways ask the peeps at sobeys if they realize the big plastic signs they have bragging about how green they are by selling you their bags has enough plastic in it to make 100,000 shopping bags. This is the hypocrisy that gets me because it's right smack dab in front of you, insulting your intelligence.
