OTTAWA—Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree says he made "misguided" comments after a leaked audio recording reviewed by the Star reveals him claiming Mark Carney's government is forging ahead with the Trudeau-era gun ban and buyback program because of electoral pressures from Quebec, despite stringent opposition from provinces, police and gun owners across the rest of the country???

It was one of many revelations made in a roughly 20-minute back-and-forth about the plan between Anandasangaree and his tenant, who lives in a Toronto residential property owned by the minister. The tenant, who is a frustrated gun owner, recorded the conversation discreetly because they were discussing issues at the home before the minister began talking about the buyback scheme.
At one point, Anandasangaree made personal promises to his tenant, offering to pay the difference to the man if the federal government's compensation is not as much as what he paid for his now-banned guns. At another, he tells him he would bail him out if he is arrested for non-compliance, though he insists it's up to police to enforce the program and "it will not go that far." (???)

Pretty sure this Lib isn’t gonna do that for all of Canada, but an interesting insight into how fair he feels this process is.

Clips of the conversation, which occurred Sunday morning, were circulating online after the man shared it with the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights. The Star has obtained the full version and confirmed the authenticity of the recording with the man, who believed the content of the conversation was in the public interest but wished not to be identified out of fear of repercussions, etc…

In a statement to the Star, Anandasangaree said he unequivocally supports the program despite his comments and that it needs to proceed after many delays because it is critical to combatting crime and getting guns off the streets.🤔

Interestingly greasy.

On that note, Prime Minister Mark Carney is standing by both the Liberals’ gun buyback plan and his embattled public safety minister who was caught on tape questioning the program.

The public safety minister also suggested the program was motivated by political considerations in Quebec.

“Quebec is in a different place than other parts of Canada, right? And this is something that’s very much a big, big, big deal for many of the Quebec electorate that voted for us,” the minister says.

Only time will tell, but I hope you’re right.

In the recording, Anandasangaree said he would personally pay the difference between what the constituent gets from the buyback program and what he paid for his guns…& that tells me that the government is planning on paying pennies on the dollar in a mandatorily optional buyback program that even they know isn’t gonna work, won’t affect crime rates, and is penalizing the wrong people. It’s dirty.
(YouTube & The Carney government claims their gun "byback" in voluntary. Tracey Wilson from CCFR says not true)

Having been caught on tape dead to rights slagging off his own long-gun buy-back program, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said just about the only thing he could say on Tuesday afternoon in unveiling the next phase of said buy-back: He had only been joking.

He was just having a little laugh when he offered to refund a gun-owning constituent any expenses incurred because of the buy-back, and indeed to bail him out of jail if he refused to give up his guns; and when he said he doesn’t think “municipal police services have the resources to do this” anyway, so not to worry; and when he said the government wouldn’t be forging ahead with the buy-back as designed had they not been lumbered with it by the lunkheads in the previous government.

Anandasangaree did not, however, disavow the notion on Tuesday that on the gun control issue, Liberals consider Quebec is more equal than the other provinces. “This is something that (is) very much a big, big, big deal for many of the Quebec electorate that voted for us,” he said. On Tuesday he pointed to the École Polytechnique 36 yrs ago, Quebec City Mosque 8 yrs ago and Dawson College attacks 19 yrs ago as informing this unique zeitgeist.

Anandasangaree also stressed repeatedly that the comments were made in a private conversation, recorded without his knowledge. That can only have been intended to elicit sympathy — as if he somehow had been led down the garden path — because it doesn’t really help his case to remind people that he says one thing in private and another in public.🤨

The program is now termed “voluntary,” by the way. It had been “mandatory” until now.🙄
This doesn’t seem to signal any particularly meaningful change. Asked about the updated language, Anandasangaree said, among other things, the following: “Our expectations is that law-abiding citizens will abide by da law.” Abide by the “voluntary” law, that is. Canadians are so law-abiding, we even follow the laws that don’t exist!
