It's obvious that he is a skilled politician and an effective speaker, but we've got possibly three years until the next election and sooner or later he's going to have to come up with some concrete policy suggestions. Right now he's playing a heavy populist hand of support for Canadians that are struggling with the cost of living, but there's a lot of real estate between talking the talk and walking the walk.

We also keep hearing about the impressive number of new CPC memberships he brought in during his leadership campaign but it's interesting that only 64% of eligible ballots were actually cast. One has to ask why a solid third of party members didn't vote.

A few decades of watching Canadian politics has left me more than a little cynical about fast talking politicians with big promises and no details about how they intend to keep them. I see a lot of talk from Poilievre, but a lot of that doesn't ring true. He talks bnig about support for the working man but his history with the Harper government put him squarely in the anti-labour camp. His latest call for the Liberals to commit to no new tax increases, including payroll deductions for CPP and EI makes no allowance for indexing those payments, and especially in the case of CPP makes no allowance for the increased pressure on put on that program by the huge wave of retiring baby boomers. We've known for some time now the our federal pension plans were under threat by the so-called gray wave, have those concerns suddenly evaporated ? I'm as much for a tax break as the next guy, but we do have to look at the effect that lower revenues will have and just how that will be compensated for.
Trudeau surfed in on a populist wave , no complaints about populism then , funny that . And Trudeau and the Liberal NDP government have the same knowledge of the CPP issues and are sitting on it .

It HAS to be later. Specifically, it has to be when the election starts.

Time and again the Conservatives have made specific policy statements before an election only to have them stolen by the liberals. Or the liberals will trash the hell out of the idea for ages in the press and make it sound horrible (and then do it themselves once they win).

And of course you can't give specifics when it's three years away to the next election, anything could change. Imagine saying you'd balance the budget in 3 years right now only to find the liberals have plunged us into a depression in 2.5 years.

We also keep hearing about the impressive number of new CPC memberships he brought in during his leadership campaign but it's interesting that only 64% of eligible ballots were actually cast. One has to ask why a solid third of party members didn't vote.
It's always that way. In fact normally it's a little lower. For most parties. It was only 55 percent in the first one for example. People forget the ballot on the table. They forget to mail it. It gets lost in the mail and they either don't get it or the party doesn't. They mail it late and it just doesn't get there in time. And of course this time out there's patrick browns votes which may have just wandered off as they were bought and paid for and didnt' actually care.

Trudeau only got 80 percent and they allowed phone in voting, they extended the campaign by several weeks when they realized they didn't get that many by the deadline, they did everything humanly possible to get people to vote and make it so easy it was hard NOT to vote. 64 percent on a mail in is pretty good.
He talks bnig about support for the working man but his history with the Harper government put him squarely in the anti-labour camp.
Anti union to a degree maybe but harper did MUCH to keep working people employed and keep their taxes low.

Look - i hear what you're saying. No politician can be trusted till you see how they perform. That's a simple truth. Look at "true blue" erin.

but you can't get so cynical that it leaves you paralized. Final decisions will have to be made at election time as always, where policy and detail is laid out and people can choose. But there's no particular reason to believe PP is being insincere at this point. He's been pretty consistant as to what his priorities are for his entire career.

You're thinking there's less of a divide in the west and more so in the east? That might very well be true. But it is the east we have to make real strides in.

Although bc is looking promising for a bit of a comeback too.
Even a lot of the socialists in the west understand we need industry to have jobs. These would be the trades unionists. Unfortunately, many of them still think the NDP represents working people.

Here is one for ya.

Does the ever increasing carbon tax actually impact emissions? Are you richer because of it? If you get a refund do you see any benefit to lending the Feds money you cant spare for 24 months without interest?

Do we need to know how pipelines impact the lesbian community?
Since low income people get a carbon scam tax rebate, it is obvious it is not about carbon at all. Just another wealth distribution scheme to take money from those that work and give to those that don’t want to.

Plus the good liberal voters that will manage the system .

Funny, people I know have gotten the rebate, and they work their asses off.

Guess it's not just 'those that don't want to' that get it.

What kind of income do they have? Do they cheat on their taxes?

One of my friends works hospital security.

Minimum wage, 12.75 an hour.

Was a company change over and now they make 20, so who knows if they get the rebate next year.

Few others I know also work same min. wage and get the rebate. They use it for helping with stuff for kids.

Cheat on taxes... automatic blame that somehow they cheat if they get the rebate?

I never cheat on my taxes.

My accountant does that. What do think I pay him for?
I had an accountant like that once. I was wrapping up a limited company at the time. Not long after he had his pp slapped by revenue Canada. Out of kindness of this little black hearts they said they would not go after any of his former clients. More probably they didn’t have th3 manpower to track down a bunch of loggers and fishers.

Obviously wasn't smart enough. I've said before, "In any tax code over 10 pages long, the remainder overwhelmingly favors the wealthy.'

The U.S. Tax Code is 4000 pages long. My money guy is an expert at 3990 of them. I've been audited 20 times in the last 30 years. No deficiencies, no penalties.

I’ve been @udited a few times times. First time I was still doing all my own bookkeeping except for taxation. Guy went through everything, managed to maybe cover his days wages and in polite terms told me I was too stupid to be able to cheat on taxes. My big problem was that 99% of the work we do is paid by cheque if you got paid at all. Really hard to hide anything.

Lots of OT here too. Same friend years ago worked literally from Spring to fall, every damned night shift, because there was no staff.

Now at least they try to cover.

Current company seems decent enough and like I said, they raised their pay to 20 (at least, if you've enough years in; 16 if you're just starting out).

But this is NB and our Government is shit.

Well it's also a lot of revenue for the gov't. So far their "returns" haven't been meeting contributions. And even if they did, they charge GST on the tax and they get to keep all that money too - estimated at 187 million JUST in bc and alberta alone as I recall (not referring to my notes but i'm pretty sure). And that was before they raised the targets.

And we all know as soon as they think they can get away with it they'll drop the refunds anyway. Just like they did in bc after about 4 years. But they keep raising it every year but the refunds are based on estimates of last year... no matter what it's a few billion dollars in rolling profit for them to spend.

He just has to counter the governments initiatives and suggest why they are wrong and give vague guidence on what he would do until an election is called. The opposition does not put forward policy. Length of time is irrelevant.
