Economist Jeffrey Sachs: U.S. Sanctions Have Devastated Venezuela & Killed Over 40,000 Since 2017

Democracy Now - More than 40,000 people have died in Venezuela since 2017 as a result of U.S. sanctions, according to a new report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research co-authored by economists Jeffrey Sachs and Mark Weisbrot. The report examines how U.S. sanctions have reduced the availability of food and medicine in Venezuela and increased disease and mortality. We speak with Jeffrey Sachs in our New York studio. In the report, he writes, “American sanctions are deliberately aiming to wreck Venezuela’s economy and thereby lead to regime change. It’s a fruitless, heartless, illegal, and failed policy, causing grave harm to the Venezuelan people.”

Bolton Pushes Military Option for Venezuela as Trump, Pentagon Hesitate – Report

The crisis in Venezuela escalated this week after opposition leader Juan Guaido announced the start of the "final phase" of the operation to overthrow the Maduro government and called on the country's military to join the opposition.

US officials have conflicting opinions on how to handle the Venezuelan crisis, with at least one heated exchange taking place last week between members of National Security Advisor John Bolton's staff and the Pentagon on the supposed lack of military options.
Speaking to the Washington Post, unnamed officials recalled a clash between Bolton's staff and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Paul J. Selva, with members of the Bolton camp repeatedly interrupting Selva during a briefing in which the general, speaking for the military, advised against escalating the situation in the Latin American country.
Officials told the WP that Selva, ordinarily known for his soft-spoken manner, angrily slammed his hand down on the table in the briefing room amid constant interruptions, with Bolton deputy Charles Kupperman adjourning the briefing earlier than planned. Selva reportedly felt that the Bolton staff's confrontational style was 'out of line', with a senior administration official saying the Bolton staffers were dissatisfied over Selva's failure to present sufficient military options.

You're an asshole. Maduro is probably just as principled as Trump, your hero. Neither are my heroes, nor is Trudeau. All you right wing nut jobs live in a black and white world. Mine is multicoloured.
As in 50 shades of wrong.
Face facts once communist/socialists sieze power it takes bloodshed to remove them. There is no communist coutry where anyone except the party elite have any wealth. The only countries that have fences to keep their people in are Communist/socislist. Cliffy lives off the generousity of capitalists.

Hence Denmark has the equipment in place that they could turn off all the taps if they wanted. All ATM's and online banking can be put into 'service mode' for as long as they like

That is the formula.......isn't it??

It,s the favorite old yankee recipe for war. It cannot be discontinued since the Yankee economy depends on murdering and plundering on a global basis, however, imperial overreach and consequent collapse always ensue. The USA is in terminal decline and internal upset is on the horizon. The next decade will produce very costly adjustments in the Yankee way of life. Very few of earths inhabitants will cry when that evil thieving murdering nation falls apart. They won,t be missed.

U.S. Government Plan, Dated 23 February 2018, for Coup in Venezuela, Now Leaks Out

This document was personally signed by Admiral Kurt W. Tidd, who was the Commander (the chief), at SOUTHCOM, and he was thus the top U.S. military official handling Venezuela. But this was far more than just a military plan. It was comprehensive — directing military, diplomatic, and propaganda, policies — regarding the Trump Administration’s planned “Overthrow” of Venezuela’s Government. His plan has since guided the Administration’s entire operation, including “the capacities of the psychological war,” regarding Venezuela.

It instructed SOUTHCOM:
“Encouraging popular dissatisfaction by increasing scarcity and rise in price of the foodstuffs, medicines and other essential goods for the inhabitants. Making more harrowing and painful the scarcities of the main basic merchandises.” …
“intensifying the undercapitalization of the country, the leaking out of foreign currency and the deterioration of its monetary base, bringing about the application of new inflationary measures.” …
“Fully obstruct imports, and at the same time discouraging potential foreign investors in order to make the situation more critical for the population.” …
“compelling him to fall into mistakes that generate greater distrust and rejection domestically” …
“To besiege him, to ridicule him and to pose him as symbol of awkwardness and incompetence. To expose him as a puppet of Cuba.” …
“Appealing to domestic allies as well as other people inserted from abroad in the national scenario in order to generate protests, riots and insecurity, plunders, thefts, assaults and highjacking of vessels as well as other means of transportation, with the intention of deserting this country in crisis through all borderlands and other possible ways, jeopardizing in such a way the National Security of neighboring frontier nations. Causing victims and holding the Government responsible for them. Magnifying, in front of the world, the humanitarian crisis in which the country has been submitted to.” …

“Structuring a plan to get the profuse desertion of the most qualified professionals from the country, in order ‘to leave it with no professionals at all’, which will aggravate even more the internal situation and along these lines putting the blame on of Government.” …
“the presence of combat units from the United States of America and the other named countries, under the command of a Joint General Staff led by the USA.”
