As for this question, IMO I think a sex based gender should be assigned at birth, but should be changed later when the person is old enough to know the difference between the gender assigned at birth and who they truly are, if it's applicable.

Why does it matter to anyone else? One's gender identity is no one's business but your own and frankly, it should affect no one but yourself.

I'd agree, but then you have people who insist on making it their business.

And then there's the Government, and all it's branches, wanting to know if you're "male" or "Female". So it's apparently their business, too.

Best solution would be to do away with it all together as an identifier, but unless/until that happens, it is unfortunately a factor in people's lives.

It's not a "choice", but rather it's the person realizing why they feel so odd, different, etc and coming to terms with that.

The only choice is letting people know this, or keep it to themselves. Ideally it should not matter and should not be a big deal, but again, too many people make it their business, make it a big deal, that it has become a 'thing'. After all, if you're not male or female, to the population at large and a good ignorant part of it, you get idiots that throw around the "I want to be a toaster" to make fun of something that's pretty damn serious.
