This is the smokiest day yet n the North Island.

I'm afraid those winds yesterday fanned up a lot of small burns.

Settle down, lol.

Snowflakes are such hot messes.
He doesn't realize that some methods for fighting fires work better than others. Like sending in smoke jumpers at the first sign. In a upgraded version the smoke detection is better and the response time is faster as drones with water bucket could be on site hours before a human party can make there.
Forest fire management is more about removing the debris on the ground. Chipping would seem to be the fastest way to turn a fallen tree into topsoil.
BTW, that was him being calm. They may even name the insanity the 'AJ Syndrome'.

$3500 for an agricultural UAV with a 20L spray tank.

It's on my shopping list.

Drones have big potential for fire fighting especially in mapping and surveillance but there is nothing that can carry enough water to make an impact. Chemical agents are a lot lighter but even there the best use I could imagine would be emergency protection for the fire fighters on the ground.

You don't need a lot of water for a lightening strike if you get there early. When I say drone I mean full sized chopper flown without a pilot on board rather than the one that can watch you through your own window. 1 operator might be able to fly more than 1 at a time. The 'ground crew' would drive fuel trucks to a location close to the fire so the drones can be refueled faster.

Along with being able to detect lightening strikes those locations can be marked so they are checked for smoke more often

There are so many ways drones might be used. They are something that should be developed and given high priority.

Unfortunately we still live in a country where we don't make the things we need.

Canada could easily be a world leader in unmanned flight, but we chose not to be.
