Sigh
In Canada 80% of firearms deaths are suicide.

In the USA over 60% of firearms deaths are suicide.

Are you seriously suggesting that my rights be truncated because somebody voluntarily sticks a gun in his mouth and tries to pull the trigger twice?
And how, exactly, would you prevent that.
I'm still waiting for something of substance from you.
You believe in certain gun control measures.
you believe gun control measures must show that they prevent murder.
so how did you come to believe in back ground checks and the other forms of gun control you support? What is your evidence that background checks prevent murder?
Gives you that interesting gait.Hey now!
I'm the local poster boy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and shooting myself in the foot repeatedly never helped me.

Actually you are mistaken.
I do not "believe" in certain gun control measures, I am willing to submit to certain gun control measures as part of the social contract.
We have gone far beyond that.
Yes they are, while in the US, before committing suicide, the gunman has killed off anywhere from two or three or as many as ?58 last count. Suicides will always find a way, but not having a gun maybe with a bit more time someone will notice how desperate they are and get them help. Do suicides not count as deaths?? Like many diseases we may yet get a handle on how to cure depression.Sigh

Ah it is not crime but killing we are preventing. Compare US;s deaths, to Canada:s with firearms. Per hundred thousand population ...no comparison .The point is Humans are violent creatures to start with. Adding easy access to a weapon gives an immediate outlet to violence. If a weapon is a little tougher to get to, it gives a space for some semblance of sanity to re-emerge.
As far as gun laws go, our system is not draconian simply preventive as far as possible while allowing those who like to kill an outlet on what is referred to as "Wild" Now that is a joke because the worse wild animal is man.
You really don't have a clue what you are talking about do you? Try and obtain a PAL and let us know hoe the process went for you.

It seems to me you have stated that in order to be useful a gun control measure must prevent murder. If it cannot be shown to prevent murder it is useless.

This is a good observation. Suicide terrorism may be a whole new category.
As I have shown over and over and over again, gun death stats are absolutely irrelevant to the conversation.
You have to show gun control prevents murder.
The two are not the same.
Murders per 100,000 people
US 4.88
Britain 0.92
Canada 1.68
Enough said?
Do you not understand? I have no interest in either obtaining a gun in order to protect myself or to kill. I am like most Canadians more interested in protecting people against killing machines which is exactly what a gun is!!You really don't have a clue what you are talking about do you? Try and obtain a PAL and let us know hoe the process went for you.
TRy the other foot.
I am more interested in knowing why some people are so sure that guns will protect the average citizen. In my life, I have had no need to shoot my food nor have I ever been threatened by a gun. Mostly I used my umbrella to beat off a dumb male who tried to assault me and made sure to stay away from older men who wanted to button up my sweater, or fondle my breasts in entry ways. I wouldn't have been as tough at protecting myself if I felt threatened by a gun. I do not think the outcome would have been as fortunate protecting myself if I had to deal with a shoot out.

Not really. All you've done is state that the U.S. has a higher murder rate than Britain or Canada. You haven't analyzed why this is.
Here's a hint: "It's cuz a gunz!" isn't an analysis.

It's a plausible theory, though.

Ya mean. . . Switzerland, where every adult male has an automatic rifle, has less than half the murder rate of Canada?
Oh, dear.

Neither is "it's cuz a demographics!"
I wonder why America has 3 times more homicides than Canada but 6 times more gun homicides than Canada?
What does it all mean?
I mean if it really is "demographics" what 2 countries have ever been more demographically similar than America and Canada?
I am sure there is a simple answer.
It seems to me you have stated that in order to be useful a gun control measure must prevent murder. If it cannot be shown to prevent murder it is useless.
Not really, In spite of the number of guns and the low rate in Switzerland, the guns are very strictly controlled. Switzerland really does use a "militia" which is highly trained.Murders per 100,000 people.

They do.
And to buy a non-restricted weapon in Switzerland, all you need is a reasonably recent copy of a police background check.
That is all.
Handguns and "assault" rifles are more tightly controlled, but there are no magazine limits, and ownership and shooting are encouraged.
Shooters are not harassed with idiotic gun laws.
What I meant to post yesterday, but couldn't find....Hey now!
I'm the local poster boy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and shooting myself in the foot repeatedly never helped me.
This afternoon at coffee at Tim's the conversation of course went to the events in Arizona, but not in the political way you might think.
We simply recalled an old foreman at work , who after he retired seemed to be suffering from dementia or Alzheimer so bad that he couldn't seem to remember you if you met on the street.
So, at work one day, we hear that the night before he had shot himself in the head with a 22.
What we found strange was that he had been flown to Toronto....we all expected him to be dead.
Well, It turned out that he had shot himself dead centre and that the bullet had travelled between the two lobes of the brain, and to keep the story short he made a complete recovery.
Sometime later (can't remember how long) I met him on the street and he said Hi to me and he remembered my name..........
!
They do.

and 4.88/100k people do not gunned down every year - for some reason
