Ever since 9/11, the Nangarhar mountainside has served as a strategic location and hideout for radical Islamic forces that have engaged America throughout the War on Terror. Back in 2001, the Battle of Tora Bora was fought there when American forces launched one of their first efforts to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden.

The al Qaeda leader was hiding out in the region at the time.

The 2005 article from the New York Times reports about how Bin Laden worked alongside the CIA to liberate Afghanistan from occupation by the Soviet Union during the 1980’s. The base in Tora Bora was described as “part of a C.I.A.-financed complex built for the mujahadeen,” and Bin Laden made further improvements to it when he turned the complex into the hideaway where he was engaged by special forces.

The article also refers to another mujahideen operative, Yunis Khalis, who reportedly received weapons and large sums of money in his own efforts against the Soviets. Khalis and Bin Laden were acquainted with each other, and their connections enabled them to build up a network with links to the Taliban.

Bustle also noted that Nangarhar has a lot of poppy fields, which invites the possibility that ISIS might have followed the Taliban’s example of producing opium to raise money. The tunnel system has also benefited human and weapons trafficking across the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Taliban condemned the use of the bomb, saying in a statement, "Using this massive bomb cannot be justified and will leave a material and psychological impact on our people."
He's just jealous they can't make an IED this big.

There are different velocities theorized for the rate of detonation of a high explosive, but any explosive material whose rate of change exceeds 1000 m/s is considered high explosive. In simple terms, even at the low end, this is why you cannot outrun an explosion.

As the shock wave travels outward from ground zero, the atmospheric pressure increases thousands of times. Behind it, a vacuum exists for a short time, as all the air is pushed away. The air is in violent transition, and this is what does the work in an explosion. The extreme movement of the air outward, and to a lesser extent, when the air rushes back to fill the void.

This short video is of an atomic blast, but the violent movement of the air is the same. The first 10 secs is just people. What you should be watching for is the effect that the blast has on the bldgs. You will see that the heat arrives first, then the outward or positive phase of the blast. Shortly thereafter, the air that was expelled away from ground zero is sucked back (the negative phase of the blast) because Mother Nature does not like a vacuum.

Lots going on.

For once, I agree with you. Parts of the ME have been killing and maiming others for so long that it was bound to catch up with them.

Keep your feet on the ground, but keep looking at the sky!
(Thanks for the inspiration, Casey Kasem!)

Or possibly "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."

Or something.

That was what Kasem actually said at the end of his shows. The ME only needs to look at the sky.

Afghanistan lost 15% of its territory to the Taliban last year

The government of Afghanistan lost control of 15 percent of its districts between Nov. 2015 and Nov. 2016, according to figures from the Pentagon. Roughly 57 percent of Afghanistan's 407 districts were under control or "influence" of the Afghan government as of mid-November, a 6 percent decrease from August and a 15 percent decrease from November 2015.

It's the piss poor training they got from the invading foreign armies...
But great! For 16 million bucks the US just got back what?

The visible shock wave should have been above ground like it is in this explosion of rocket fuel.

US Forces-Afghanistan Commander Gen. John W. further defended the choice of the armament during a press conference held on April 14. "This was the right weapon against the right target," he said.

When fighting OBL hiding in caves is that not when bunker buster bombs were used so the deeper caves were eliminated. Using air blasts outside did nothing to the deeper caves as sound is part of the destruction methods. 36 members killed that would have been just the guards on duty. The 360 hiding deep inside the caves come out once the cameras go away and they are spirited away to some friendly country as a refugee, one that escaped with all his riches.
Any footy-prints or SUV's in the parking lot??

Of course. If you had any idea how explosives worked, you would not say something so stupid. Do you know the layout of the caves and tunnels? No you don't, so keep your uninformed opinions to yourself.
