I thought it was the Buddha who said that. I do believe that Jesus must have spent at least part of those "missing" 18 years in India learning Buddhist teachings as many of his were very Buddhist in tone compared to the OT. I also find it interesting that god went from being this jealous, angry, vengeful, psycho mass murderer in the OT to this peace and love kinda guy in the NT.The OT is clearly a covenant between God and Israel while the NT is a covenant between God and everyone, super-ceding the OT except for the Ten Commandments, although several of them were broken down into one basic commandment in the NT, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Although I prefer the less wordy translation, "Don't be a dick!"

Many right-wing Christians vilify the poor, in direct contradiction to the teachings of Jesus. Why the hypocrisy?

In an age where your average Republican politician is thumping the Bible with one hand and trying to strip food from the mouths of the poor with the other, it’s become a sad cliché to point out how little the most outspoken Christians have in common with their charity-preaching, forgiveness-loving messiah. It’s only gotten worse in recent years, with the followers of the man who cured lepers threatening to shut down the government if Obama insists on giving more people access to healthcare.

Maybe we should put all of Wally's liberal/lefty hating threads into one thread.

Can we put all the Christian-hating threads into one thread?
By what? You think you have found the answer and I think you are the one who is deceived. You think that by believing as you do, you have faith when nothing could be farther from the truth. Having belief is a closing of the mind. You think you have all the answers so there is no need to have an inquiring mind. Belief is the antithesis of faith. Why are so many unchristians so easily deceived, Cliffy?
I would have to agree in that when you are completely convinced that you have "found" the truth, you may lose this sense of wonder that begins in all of us. Even ole Socrates long ago took the know it alls and systematically broke down their "knowledge" of things. When they came to a point where they admitted that they did not "know", they were then free to grow. It's good to have a sense of wonder. Then we can look at each other as truly equal.By what? You think you have found the answer and I think you are the one who is deceived. You think that by believing as you do, you have faith when nothing could be farther from the truth. Having belief is a closing of the mind. You think you have all the answers so there is no need to have an inquiring mind. Belief is the antithesis of faith.
