Bystander shoots, kills robber at East Knoxville convenience store

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A man who attempted to rob an East Knoxville convenience store early Monday morning was shot and killed by a bystander, according to Knoxville Police Department.

Officers responded to the Breadbox located on the 6200 block of Asheville Highway around 2:35 a.m after receiving a call that shots had been fired.

When officials arrived, they found Tamon J. Stapleton, 18, dead with a gunshot wound. Police say Stapleton, armed with a 9mm handgun, had entered the store and was forcing the female clerk behind the counter at gunpoint.

A male friend of the clerk, who was outside the store in his parked vehicle, witnessed the attempted robbery, retrieved his handgun, entered the store and fired one shot, hitting Stapleton.

WATE 6 On Your Side wanted to find out if that was legal so we reached out to Knox County’s top prosecutor.

“The law in Tennessee as to third party is basically the same as it is to any individual in self defense,” said Knox County District Attorney General Charme P. Allen. “If you walk upon a stranger and you think that stranger is fixing to be hurt, then you can act on behalf of that strange.”

Knoxville police said no other injuries were reported. Officers say the friend will not face any charges because he was acting to protect another citizen. The gun Stapleton used is believed to be stolen and its serial number had been removed.

Officers say this incident was not related to a second robbery also occurred at the Breadbox located on Millertown Pike around 3:30 a.m.

I have a lot of respect for our police officers, but in times of crisis like LA riots, they stood down. The problem was too big for them to handle. Thousands of crimes were left undocumented and unsolved. Some victims fully expected that the authorities would look after them.

I think there are a few who are very good, professional and dedicated, not including the four f**king clowns of course who murdered the Polish guy at Vancouver Airport. Those f**kers are a disgrace who should be doing about 25 years in a concrete bunkers (and maybe a judge or two along with them)

Gun manufacturing has increased because of weak controls. Insubstantial regulations may actually start a world war. Maybe the question of gun control isn't a bad idea.

Why only the little guns though?

Yup. Good analogy. Everybody knows that water was designed SPECIFICALLY to take human life.

You are a propagandiste, the firearm is designed specifically to contain the explosion therefore saving the life of its owner every time it is fired.

Furthermore, it is used 2 million times per year in a defensive gun use situation where a shot is not fired. Whereas, it is only used 33k times by already criminally heinous people to cause deaths. These deaths are clearly an "off label" use of the product which is illegal in all 52 states.

Dumbass, there are 57 states. Obama said so, and he's the President.

When were the other two added?

I am a "Ridiculoustatemenhtobserviste" ... equating firearms with water is, well bizarrely stupid.

Nonsense. Look at all the things firearms and water have in common!

1. They're both made of matter.

Umm. . .

2. They can both be used as weapons (though only one was purpose-designed to be used as a weapon).

3. They can both be used for non-weapon purposes (though using guns as doorstops or inferior hammers kinda wastes money).

4. They're both. . . umm. . . in the dictionary.

5. They're both. . . hmm. . . essential for water-skiing.

See? That's five things just off the top of my head guns and water have in common.
