Most "Christians" don't give it a second thought when they swear an oath....

What's ridiculous is that an avowed atheist that does not believe in a (any) Gods has a problem with swearing an oath to an entity that he believes is fictional.

I court (divorce) they asked me to swear on the bible. I said it would be meaningless for me to do that, but I would swear on my mother's grave. The court accepted that. That was back in the 70s. My mother was still alive at the time. I thought swearing was forbidden in the bible.

Another way to look at it is that they want their oath to mean something and to pledge that oath to something they believe doesn't exist takes away the gravity with which they pledge that oath. Sort of like if they were asked to swear an oath on Big Bird or Unicorns.
The U.S. Legal system allows people to give sworn testimony or to make oaths.. by swearing to God.. or by affirmation.. which has the same weight. I'm sure it applies to the U.S. military as well.

TV preacher Pat Robertson lashed out at a “Jewish radical” on Thursday who he said was responsible for God being removed from the Air Force oath.

On the evidence we've seen, yes. Nothing like a good dose of the divine to promote maximum murderous cruelty.
Aside from the complete lack of evidence and totally illogical silliness of religion, one of the surest proofs for me that it's all a pile of buffalo chips is the simple fact that there's no discernible difference in the conduct of religious people and organisations and that of non-religious people and organisations.
