Petros... some academics and scientist are perfectly happy living on government grants. Going out into the DPS (Dreaded Private Sector) requires real work.

Universities would rather have the labs and funding to create a far better learning environment which makes for better scientists.

Anyone with a lick of sense can see the slash and burn of Harper. Some cuts make sense, others do not
Tax auditors- cut- each position more than pays for itself/ Billions in overseas tax shelters, unreported and waiting for the Tax man to find. Information was provided to CCRA years ago.
Anyone hear of the rich ones going to court??

Well I guess the answer to the unspoken question is how many scientists latched on to the public teat does Canada need?

There is huge redundency in the Fed public sector and some of it needs to go.

On a typical resource extraction project the primary developer hires a private contracting company that uses it's scientists to evaluate environmental impacts.
Then the Province sends in it's public sector environmental assessment scientists to evaluate the impacts.
And then the Fed's spring to the fore and send in their own public sector scientists for yet another evaluation.
And then the municipality may or may not throw a few of their local experts into the mix.
And then First Nations and the greeny-weenies try to kill the project anyway.
I for one think there is room for some streamlining here.
And I think it needs to come from the taxpayer funded public sector.

When Harper and the Con's took over the governance of Canada they massively increased the Fed public sector.
And the Dip's and the Lib's howled that the Con's were increasing spending.
Now when Harper and the Con's start to cut the Fed public sector the Lib's and the Dip's are howling about job cuts.
You cannot have it both ways.
I for one am all for cutting the Fed public sector back to the size that the Fed Lib's had it at before Harper and the Con's built it up as a response to the
extended recession.
And that would mean lot's more layoffs in the future.

Oh, and those libraries that the Fed Con's are closing?
That is a typical opposition spin story.
The departments involved in maintaining those libraries have reported that some of them get less than 15 visitors a year.
Great jobs for the technicians and library specialists I suppose.
Harper and the Con's response: digitize every single book and publication and make it available online right across the country.
Put most of the physical publications into central storage.
Close the physical library building and lay off or repurpose the affected technicians, scientists and librarians.
I view this as a good news story.

So it has to be either or? For my line of work, there are two people that can audit our lab. We waited months for our approval to run new studies with new isolates, because we had to wait for the CFIA approval of our labs. Months. That meant lost productivity, in a private sector scientific field, that is a job creator. The government is a service provider too you know. The funding should be based on meaningful metrics, not some arbitrary %age cut/increase dreamed up by the PMO and Cabinet.

And you believe that?

Well I tend to agree with a lot you have said, and no it does not have to be either or.
But at the end of the day I believe that the closer a government is to the people the more responsive it is.
So I favor cuts in the more distant Federal public sector.
The world economy aunt what it was and the taxpayers can only handle a limited tax burden.
And since federally we elected Harper and the Con's it becomes their portfolio to deal with.

I do not disagree with what you are saying about approvals and inspections.
I suspect the lab work you were doing was highly specialized and a little more difficult to inspect and approve than the norm.
When a small company I worked for needed to build storage for several different types on nuclear sources, including very hot liquid source approvals and inspections took forever.
So be it.

The public sector is not a make work project and nor is it an employment agency.
Lean, mean and efficient is what I would like to see.

And you believe that?
Yes I do.
Why, do you think the public servants entrusted to do the job are incompetent or unable to digitize a small library?

Which of the libraries have you visited? I've been to the Saint Andrews Biological Station Library. I've used it. The last time I was in contact with a colleague there, in late November, we couldn't access the material. It isn't digitized. It's just gone.

You have it all wrong. I don't believe politicians. There have already been leaked memos and collections found in dumpsters. They have laid off the employees in the libraries. These were not small collections.

I have personally visited none.

But let me ask you: which politicians? Cons, Libs, Dips or greenies?
Could you be biased somewhat?

Quote CBC:
"On Monday, DFO told CBC News that “all of its copyrighted material has been digitized and that the rest of its collection will be soon.”
"Users will continue to have completely free access to every item in DFO’s collections. All materials for which DFO has copyright will be preserved by the department," Fisheries Minister Gail Shea wrote in a statement to CBC."

I really don't know what to say, maybe it's all lies.
Perhaps its a grand conspiracy hidden behind a smokescreen.

Perhaps it's a modern equivalent of a book burning.

Or maybe not.
I really dunno.
But I hope for the best.

Politicians. I've voted for every party at one time or another. There's a reason I said politicians. Do you happen to think one brand is less inclined to lie than another? I'm not very old, but I'm not that naive.

What DFO considers it's copyright? You do know that Canadian researchers often colaborate with researchers in other countries, right? DFO copyright is a DFO report. Those libraries weren't filled with DFO reports only. I really don't know what to say, if you haven't learned yet to parse a politicians carefully chosen words. That's their trade...I am telling you for a fact that the material I was looking for was gone. The library is empty, and they haven't said where to find it. Has DFO mentioned in any of their PR pieces covered by the media where one can access all of this digitized material, because their employee who has worked there for nearly 15 years didn't know where to find it. Instead I took him at his word instead of wasting my time searching for documents in places where I don't even know to look.

All to save $443,000 a year, and losing 9.7 FTE. You could blow through those savings with a couple Canada Research Chairs. How are those Cyclone helicopters coming along anyways? This is not at all about prudence. It's a different word that starts with p...

Tonington I really think your politics are starting to show.

The department itself admits some of it's libraries only get around 15 visitors a year.
The CBC, which hates Harper and the Con's with a passion reports that the libraries are being digitized for public dissemination.
The CBC, which hates Harper and the Cons's with a passion has, of yet, found no evidence of wanton book destruction, or lack of the digitization process or any other forms of skullduggery or deception.
The Public Service departments involved in this process, which certainly involve more than just the DFO report no wanton book destruction, or lack of digitization or any other skullduggery.
Federal Public servants tend to be Liberals and also tend to hate Harper and the Conservatives.
THe federal opposition parties consisting of the Dip's, the Lib's and the Greenies with all their resources, contacts and spies report no evidence of wanton book destruction, lack of digitization or any other forms of skullduggery or deception.

Thus, Tonington this whole evil conspiracy seems to rest with you.

I guess we will all find out for sure some time in the future.
What more is there to say?
