Petros... some academics and scientist are perfectly happy living on government grants. Going out into the DPS (Dreaded Private Sector) requires real work.
Universities would rather have the labs and funding to create a far better learning environment which makes for better scientists.
Tuitions are up and grants down there also
Well I guess the answer to the unspoken question is how many scientists latched on to the public teat does Canada need?
I view this as a good news story.
When Harper and the Con's took over the governance of Canada they massively increased the Fed public sector.
And the Dip's and the Lib's howled that the Con's were increasing spending.
Now when Harper and the Con's start to cut the Fed public sector the Lib's and the Dip's are howling about job cuts.
You cannot have it both ways.
Harper and the Con's response: digitize every single book and publication and make it available online right across the country.
Yes I do.So it has to be either or? For my line of work, there are two people that can audit our lab. We waited months for our approval to run new studies with new isolates, because we had to wait for the CFIA approval of our labs. Months. That meant lost productivity, in a private sector scientific field, that is a job creator. The government is a service provider too you know. The funding should be based on meaningful metrics, not some arbitrary %age cut/increase dreamed up by the PMO and Cabinet.
Well I tend to agree with a lot you have said, and no it does not have to be either or.
But at the end of the day I believe that the closer a government is to the people the more responsive it is.
So I favor cuts in the more distant Federal public sector.
The world economy aunt what it was and the taxpayers can only handle a limited tax burden.
And since federally we elected Harper and the Con's it becomes their portfolio to deal with.
I do not disagree with what you are saying about approvals and inspections.
I suspect the lab work you were doing was highly specialized and a little more difficult to inspect and approve than the norm.
When a small company I worked for needed to build storage for several different types on nuclear sources, including very hot liquid source approvals and inspections took forever.
So be it.
The public sector is not a make work project and nor is it an employment agency.
Lean, mean and efficient is what I would like to see.
And you believe that?
Why, do you think the public servants entrusted to do the job are incompetent or unable to digitize a small library?
TPP is the authority and the law now, there is no longer any need for libraries. Prime Minister Harper is a genius, I'm very happy I voted for him. God bless Steven
Link?Well, didn't he say you wouldn't recognize Canada when he was done with it ? Meby your GRANDFATHER would .
Which of the libraries have you visited? I've been to the Saint Andrews Biological Station Library. I've used it. The last time I was in contact with a colleague there, in late November, we couldn't access the material. It isn't digitized. It's just gone.
You have it all wrong. I don't believe politicians. There have already been leaked memos and collections found in dumpsters. They have laid off the employees in the libraries. These were not small collections.
I have personally visited none.
But let me ask you: which politicians? Cons, Libs, Dips or greenies?
Could you be biased somewhat?
Quote CBC:
"On Monday, DFO told CBC News that “all of its copyrighted material has been digitized and that the rest of its collection will be soon.”
"Users will continue to have completely free access to every item in DFO’s collections. All materials for which DFO has copyright will be preserved by the department," Fisheries Minister Gail Shea wrote in a statement to CBC."
I really don't know what to say, maybe it's all lies.
Perhaps its a grand conspiracy hidden behind a smokescreen.
So did the politicians throw your books away ? aaaaWhich of the libraries have you visited? I've been to the Saint Andrews Biological Station Library. I've used it. Yup make Ottawant smaller one small step at a time . Steven Harper the man for the century.Politicians. I've voted for every party at one time or another. There's a reason I said politicians. Do you happen to think one brand is less inclined to lie than another? I'm not very old, but I'm not that naive.
What DFO considers it's copyright? You do know that Canadian researchers often colaborate with researchers in other countries, right? DFO copyright is a DFO report. Those libraries weren't filled with DFO reports only. I really don't know what to say, if you haven't learned yet to parse a politicians carefully chosen words. That's their trade...I am telling you for a fact that the material I was looking for was gone. The library is empty, and they haven't said where to find it. Has DFO mentioned in any of their PR pieces covered by the media where one can access all of this digitized material, because their employee who has worked there for nearly 15 years didn't know where to find it. Instead I took him at his word instead of wasting my time searching for documents in places where I don't even know to look.
All to save $443,000 a year, and losing 9.7 FTE. You could blow through those savings with a couple Canada Research Chairs. How are those Cyclone helicopters coming along anyways? This is not at all about prudence. It's a different word that starts with p...
