I seem to recall that both Ignatief and Dion had all kinds of polls that 'suggested' they would form gvt.

When Harper called the last election, he got all type of flack from the talking heads saying he would be crushed by the inevitable Iggy Majority. People are fickle. They won't remember what happens now or even at the start of the campaign just the last couple of weeks. Also the weeks/months after a convention are always good for a temporary boost of 5 points in the polls.

Of course maybe Trudeau will do something he hasn't shown the slightest hit at so far and surprise. But that would mean he would have to have a policy rather than just trying to get by on his looks and his name. But anything is possible I suppose.

just the other day you were all about native culture, there are quite a few native nations outside of Quebec........
I was, of course, talking about the dominant "culture" which I have found sorely lacking since moving out west. Native culture in this country is treated as a curiosity, like Italian, Ukrainian or Greek culture, not embraced by most in the mindless consumer "culture".

...I'd just welcome some dramatic relief to that boring sort of hand jive in a Harper speech
Hand jive? Is he pulling a Michael Jackson on stage?

I dont remember that. I know they'd occasionally tie with the Conservatives or go a point or two ahead but thats about it. It seemed to be a foregone conclusion that they wouldnt win the elections. The only thing that surprised me about Ignatieff's defeat was how much he lost by. It was by quite a bit more than most were expecting.

So there is no Canadian culture? Just immigrants and Quebec? That is an unfortunate assumption. Perhaps you should return east.

First of all at this stage Trudeau should be ahead he is the new leader of a major party.
Second the last of the attack approach is wearing thin, its the last of the Karl Rove era.
It worked for a while but it wore itself out and the Tories have nothing else. I think
Harper is in trouble but that won't manifest itself for a while. The continuous drop from
a little over forty percent to around thirty percent is a concern for Harper. They are now
preparing Jayson Kenny for the role and he does not have enough depth to do the deed

The old political truth is that nobody likes attack ads...but they work. However, if they are not done right, or if they are poorly timed, they can backfire with disastrous results. Such was the case with the Soldiers in the Streets ads or, even more catastrophically, with Kim Campbell's perceived attack on Chretien's disability.

The latest Trudeau ad failed. If it didn't we wouldn't still be talking about it. If it didn't you wouldn't have Consevative MPs distancing themselves from it. I don't think it will be as bad as the above examples, since we are a long way from an election, but it does put the Conservatives on the defensive for the time being.

Sometimes the whole negative campaign writ large backfires as well, against a viable "high road" candidate. Once that switch is flipped, the more negative the campaign gets against a positive opponent, the more it hurts the attacking party--as evidenced by the McCain/Palin run against Obama. Too bad, really. I liked Obama over McCain (big surprise, right) but I always thought McCain had more to offer than what we saw. He had bad advisors, I think.

I don't think anyone watches those adds more than once on TV....after the first time, that's the time they pick to pour another coffee or grab another beer.....
If it wasn't for the forum....I wouldn't even be thinking about them...8O

When the Liberals brought down the government they had a nice lead in the polls. Talking heads were using the words Liberal Majority together as a possible outcome. This is what made Iggy's fall so dramatic.

Nation cringes in unison as Trudeau’s mommy says ‘Someone is bullying my Justin’

Imagine you’re the new leader of the Liberal Party. You’re young, hip and looking good in the polls. The Conservatives even start a nasty smear campaign against you because they’re that terrified of you.

Then your mom embarrasses you in front of the whole country. That’s pretty much what happened Thursday when Margaret Trudeau addressed a crowd in North Bay.

“Someone is bullying my Justin and that makes me mad,” she said, presumably to groans of embarrassment from everyone there.
She was referring to the Tory ads showing Justin Trudeau doing a mild striptease for a charity event. Pretty much everyone who has seen the ad has realized they are not even misleading, but just outright lies. Even some Conservative MPs, mindless drones that they are, have come forward to denounce the whole smear campaign, promising not to send out flyers featuring similar attacks to their constituents.

Margaret Trudeau, however, seems to think her special little guy needs protection from the mean bully Stephen Harper.

“We have to get rid of bullying in politics,” Trudeau said, before making a bullying remark about how “if Stephen Harper took off his shirt in public, I’m not sure he’d raise any money for charity.”

Unless you want to call beer and hockey riots a culture. Oh, and I'm here because of the land not the culture.

You're experiencing culture every day. You might just not recognize it because you're living it. What I think you're bemoaning is the lack of "exotic" culture. You know, the stuff with strange accents, spicy foods, opera, guns, stuff like that. :p

Thumbs up to Juan. It's refreshing to see another thread about Justin Trudeau and that is not authored by the Cobalt Kid is an added plus.

Having said that, I wouldn't put too much stock in the polls. Polls had the Wildrose Party wiping out the Conservatives in Alberta before the last election. Guess who won the election. Canadians will not be handing over the reigns to this inexperienced GQ cover-boy, I'd bet more than a beer or two on that.

And Angstrom, Trudeau isn't all that popular in Quebec, especially outside of Montreal where his father was considered a real rat. You best hope they stick with the NDP, because the alternative is a resurgence of THE BLOC, not the Liberals.

The only people insulted and attacked in Attack Ads are the voters.

If you like this lowest form of politics, chances are you are the lowest form of person in our ranks.
And I pity you all.

I don't think all the silly pictures and video are necessary. But anything that comes out of his yap is fair game and wholly necessary.
