Oh here we go, where I have seen this tactic before.

Do you always brush your defeats under the rug like this.

If you haven't noticed this thread has waxed and waned over these issues .

You know it and i know it that Harper is white washing the environment in much the same way as the DRILL DRILL DRILLL crowd down south.

The push is on, and without the Idle No More , and the occupy wall street movements there is no opposition that works.

Do we really need this push to rape our land.

Is Canada to be a slag heap ?

The right wing nut cases are having their day. The brainwashed masses like our southern neighbours who don't want medi care, are funding them and voting them in power.

The left wing nut cases can't unite under one banner like Harper did when he conned the head of the conservative party.

All thats left is the street. The cold, sane street.

I know what Petros is going on about. Mostly it is "Look at that flying pig over there". To use solid wood and be thermally efficient the walls would have to be about a foot thick. Other wise you couldn't pump heat into those shacks fast enough to take your parka off. The ones he posted have about 3 in thick walls. Might do for a summer cabin at the lake in florida. I also have serious reservations about the roof taking the snow load. These shacks are about the size of a small house trailer. There are better options.
Nope. They meet CDN, American and EU spec.

They do the job and use far less labour, cheaper labour and materials and that is how they can fit three to a sea can with no waste or on-site manufacturing.

The only thing Non-Canadian about those houses is where they are made.

Canadian companies, using canadian softwood, running Canadian design software driven milling machines. This isn't something new. It's been around since the late 70's in Canada I can take pictures of a coulpe that have been around that long in my neighbourhood.

Zoom into street view Red lobster regina - Google Maps

Compared to the mining camp housing they recently bought these will last a lot longer.

The wife and I have been researching these for about three years for when we semi-retire on the farm and I set up an oufitters operation.

The day my daughter graduates University and there is no more supporting her, we're out of the city and building a nice soild home with a beautiful sunrise view of the Assiniboine Valley.

If you don't think those are up to snuff there are kit homes made in China and sold in Canada through Beaver and have impressive structural stats like R-63 fibreglass in the ceiling.

Check them out for yourself. Beaver Homes and Cottages

There are some really decent options that far surpass the mining camp housing they are buying for $250K

SO how about telling us how you earn your living. And how it contributes to the general well being of Canada.
Or is this your first visit to Canada?

What does that have to do with anything in this thread.

I will say I was born in Canada.
I have continued my education and worked all my life.
I will continue to educate myself further and work.
I do not come from wealth but my partner does.

I find it quite amusing that people here resort to these infantile forum tactics to thwart discussion and learning. Substitute little smiley emoticons and no substance for actual rebuttal.
As if that is clever or makes one above the other. To my way of seeing it ,it is defeatist, while trying to feign being an elitist .rofl.

All quite the hoot.

And yes I will always set myself ready for learning something new or admitting when I'm wrong.
Unlike most in here where it all appears to be just some mutual masturbation technique of each other's frail egos'.

What is also quite a hoot is the delivery of platitudes and emotionally charged accusations without any offering of proof or cause/effect.

Possibly even more interesting is the reality that you've conveniently elected NOT to recognize the effect that your life (and lifestyle) have on poor Mother Gaia.

So, what's it to be? Chastise everyone else on what ought to be while protecting yourself from vilification or ante-up and do something proactive that will stem the rape of the planet and pollution of the air?

I wait with baited anticipation

Meanwhile not sure if this has been posted yet- could not find it due to all the yakking on houses.
Canada leaves Aboriginal hopes to incubate in misery | Full Comment | National Post

It’s not just the tweaks to land-lease management on reserves contained in Bill C-45, which in part ignited the “Idle no More” protests. There have been many attempts at piecemeal repair. In 1996 there was Bill C-79, the Indian Act Optional Modification Act; it died on the order paper. In 2002 there was Bill C-7, the First Nations Governance Act, which attempted to reform reserve administration across the board. It perished in 2003. In 2008 there was Bill C-47, the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act, to redress inequity in the treatment of women. That one died on the order paper three times. It is before Parliament again as Bill S-2.

Amid these and other efforts, conditions on reserves have worsened. In its 2011 status report, the office of the Auditor-General chronicles, in customarily neutral tones, a horror show of civil neglect. On reserves, the high school graduation rate is 41 per cent, compared with a national average near 80 per cent. There’s a worsening housing shortage and huge numbers of the houses that do exist are mould-ridden. Children on reserves are eight times likelier than the national average to be in the care of child and family services.

This is not the upshot of one audit, mind you, but many. There were seven, between 2002 and 2008, chronicling the same problems.

At root, the malaise is economic. Except where there is a nearby resource development, or an enterprise such as a casino, these are communities with no natural economies, served by a remote federal bureaucracy (rather than a conventional municipal or provincial one), in which neither individuals nor the bands themselves hold title to their lands or homes.

The lack of property rights is not incidental. It is fundamental. It prevents the securing of mortgages, the building of equity and the accumulation of wealth. In effect the reserve system incentivizes misery, paying people to live where they cannot work. This is why all sides in this equation, including reserve residents and the taxpayer who bears the cost of Aboriginal Affairs’ $7.4-billion annual budget, feel so viscerally that they are being cheated. They are.

A forensic audit? or just a look at the books?

You'd have to ask the government that since it was an audit by their request and it is them that is sitting on the results at this time.

Remember how Enron had Arthur Anderson provide their 'audit'?

... Funny, neither company is around anymore after the gvt took a wee look-see

see above

I read the links. Nowhere did I see any mention of doing a proper audit. And I don't mean the accounting firm hired by the band to look over the books. To do a proper forensic audit for that size of organization would probably take a team of bean counters 3 months to do.

see above.

and the above is a far cry from the chinese model for 20k that you were originally going on about. Also not that the insulation listed WILL have to be upgraded and there is no mention of even electrical rough in. We are now up to 42k but the above does not include electrical, heating, or plumbing, and still needs to be shipped to the site, put on a foundation, hooked up to municipal and erected and finished.

Also JLM..... please note that in the specs there is no mention of "U" value, it is all about the "R" value. Now, if we were talking about heat exchangers, it would be all about the "U" value.

Nope, unlike jlm though, I won't be taken in with your "baffle em with bullshyte".

Is it possible to manufacture prefabs and ship at costs lower than what it costs for new construction?
Would geothermal be more efficient than oil- gas- and such.
If both are feasible and cost effective. Could these prefabs not be built by FN peoples that are closer to larger cities- materials would be close by.

Shipping is much easier where there are roads. They end at Cochrane and the railroad goes as far as Moosonee

I don't get taken in with baffle and bullsh*t, Gerry, I check out web sites like the ones I posted and what they say coincides with what Petros has been saying, not being an expert I can't say 100% but what he says is credible at least!

How many reserves are in areas where roads do not exist- flying in is the only option- by sea would be useful I think for some.
Is what I presented a viable industry for FN peoples. Hire FN persons- buy local- Would not take a major set up of facilities for building prefabs.
The housing is atrocious - the population is growing. And the kicker- The FN family has ownership.
Cement would be a problems but they have portables for this do they not?

I guess whether it be prefab or new construction, all the material has to be transported up there one way or the other. With geothermal would you not still have to have a back up system?..........being there is no heat in the ground for about 5 months of the year up there.

This is a far superior house than the one you originally posted. But it still requires foundation, plumbing, heating and electrical plus freight and labour.

I guess whether it be prefab or new construction, all the material has to be transported up there one way or the other. With geothermal would you not still have to have a back up system?..........being there is no heat in the ground for about 5 months of the year up there.

Geothermal provides heating and cooling - Heat in the winter - cooling in the summer - But Yes a back up heating source would make sense.

A lot of ifs and maybes but it would be somewhat cheaper to send in prefabs. A little less labour cost in erecting but still require tradesmen for all the other work. There is no reason that lumber couldn't be manufactured on site in many cases. DOes require motivation though as well as a few experienced people to make it work. Petros , I think it was posted some pics a bunch of pages back that showed a panabode style with two layers of walls with insulation inbetween. This style could be manufactured in many locations. Again there is still the foundation and all the mechanical to consider. All this stuff does have to be freighted in.
Motivation does seem to be the big problem. I think the native leaders like the system in place now where BIG BROTHER supplies everything and all they have to do is fill out applications. I'm not convinced that the leadership wants the rank and file to have real jobs.
