...Iran is an oppressive religious state with an abysmal human rights record. I oppose Iran's discrimination based on religion, gender and sexual orientation. They have the death penalty. So I also don't support Canada having close relations with Iran.
I also find holocaust denial objectionable, but diversionary. Certainly Iran has more than a few Holocaust deniers. But they are words, not actions. Regarding the Holocaust, I believe it happened and that millinos of Jews, Roma, Slavs, Russian POWs, Jehovah Witnesses... perished in Nazi death camps. But I also support the right of historians to research these events and publish peer reviewed papers without harassment.
Both Iran and Israel practice religious based discrimination... just different religions, but the same kind of hate from my agnostic perspective. Both Israel and Iran have called for the other's down fall and neither side has threatened the other's genocide... despite distortions by Israel and their supporters to the contrary.
Israel possesses nukes and could vaporize Iran.
Iran possesses sufficient conventional weapons to vaporize Israel back, without resorting to WMDs.
Iran's human rights record is abysmal. They oppress women and homosexuals almost as badly as Saudi Arabia and a few other countries in the region.....

I trust Nobel Peace Laureate Amnesty International to give me an unbiased and fair assessment of a country's human rights record. I stand by what I said. Israel has a worse human rights record than Iran. Its not that Iran's record is good, but that Israel's human rights record is so bad.

The Israeli authorities continued to blockade the Gaza Strip, prolonging the humanitarian crisis there, and to restrict the movement of Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the authorities continued to construct the fence/wall, much of it on Palestinian land, and to expand settlements, breaching international law. They demolished Palestinian homes and other facilities in the West Bank, and homes of Palestinian citizens inside Israel, especially in “unrecognized” villages in the Negev. Israeli settlers and soldiers accused of committing abuses against Palestinians generally escaped accountability. The authorities failed to conduct independent investigations into alleged war crimes by Israeli forces during Operation “Cast Lead” in 2008-2009. The Israeli authorities arrested thousands of West Bank Palestinians. More than 307 were administrative detainees held without charge or trial; others received prison terms following military trials. Israel held more than 4,200 Palestinian prisoners at the end of 2011. Reports of torture and other ill-treatment of detainees continued.
Iran
Freedom of expression, association and assembly were severely restricted. Political dissidents, women’s and minority rights activists and other human rights defenders were arbitrarily arrested, detained incommunicado, imprisoned after unfair trials and banned from travelling abroad. Torture and other ill-treatment were common and committed with impunity. Women as well as religious and ethnic minorities faced discrimination in law and in practice. At least 360 people were executed; the true total was believed to be much higher. Among them were at least three juvenile offenders. Judicial floggings and amputations were carried out.

There were continuing systematic violations of the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Limited progress was made in addressing concerns about human rights violations associated with counter-terror and policing operations.

BTW, what is your stand on torturing children? The US and Israel both do this with the unshakable support of the Canadian government. I'm against torturing children:
