hell

noun \ˈhel\
1
a (1) : a nether world in which the dead continue to exist : hades (2) : the nether realm of the devil and the demons in which the damned suffer everlasting punishment —often used in curses <go to hell> or as a generalized term of abuse <the hell with it>

It is not even a "swear word" unless you make it one......

Mark Twain once said something about hell in Hawaii. Apparently he had been there and observed American missionaries helping out the natives of the paradise by informing them of this place called "hell". I wonder if preachers and missionaries and suchlike are denied diplomas for saying the word.

She veered from the approved script therefore she's in the wrong. Just a poor kid with stupid parents looking for publicity.

Pure idiocy. I say screw their apology. The fact that she was the valedictorian and had a 4.0 average should be the reason that she receives her diploma, and the fact that she said one single word should not change that fact.

The fact that she received passing grades for all her classes alone is enough to validate her receiving her diploma.

She veered from the approved script therefore she's in the wrong. Just a poor kid with stupid parents looking for publicity.

My, how very politically correct of you.

I'm with you Walter. IMO, withholding a straight A diploma that this young lady busted her ass for four years to achieve is far too lenient for using a profane word in a valedictorian speech. I'm thinking she also needs a public flogging.

I think Kaitlin Nootbaar has excellent reason to sue. In order to get a diploma,
she had to get at least passing grades in all her classes, She passed all her classes with
a grade point average of 4.0., a perfect score. Saying the word, "hell" is not a reason to
hold up her diploma. If it were to go to court, she would win hands down. The court could
award punitive damages that might cost the school a lot of money. It would be best for all, if
they just gave her the damn diploma.

Religion has created more problems in the world than anything else and we should
say to hell with them. Can you imagine the small minds in charge of the education
system? No wonder much of today's youth wants little to do with our institutions.
Adults take great pride in making fools of themselves.
I have heard younger kids use words a lot worse than hell. I have a born again family
living one farm over. Last summer the parents went away for a week and the parties
started the language was unbelievable. There was drinking and all sorts of activities.
I spoke to the young fellow the next day about noise after 3am.
He asked are you going to tell my folks? Nope, just knock it off next time after 3 am.
Have had no problem since.
The religious nuts are their own worst enemy they present an unrealistic world to the kids
who end up rejecting even the valuable parts of what they learn. This kid will shake it off
and move on, and will likely open the eyes to hypocrisy

Agreed. I dont care if she burned the school to the ground. She fulfilled the requirements to get the diploma and should get it. The school administration is the one looking like an idiot in this case. Some people are just way too sensitive. They're in for a real shock when they find out whats happening outside of their little bubble.

Where did religion play a factor? Swearing did. This wasn't a Christian thing, this was a principle being upset at her saying hell. It is a control thing. If anything, public schools attack any and every reference to anything Christian. Public School administrators are all about control of the students AND parents and pounce on anything that has to do with religion. Even Santa Claus is a target for some odd reason.

This was just a d*** head principle that wanted to exert final authority over a student that dared disobey or in this case not follow the speech he approved of.
