They were following the law. The theater is a no gun zone, except for the nutcases.
Two reasons:
1. Because not enough Americans exercise their rights.
2. Because the Cinemark theatre chain has a "gun-free" policy. Licensed people carrying guns are not permitted to enter.
Number two kinda made it all too easy, didn't it?

That is about how banning guns or ammo in Toronto will work too. The government knows where the legal ones are and will steal them but ignore the illegal ones.
Whatcha mean, some old guys a few centuries ago said its their right. But even then what about all the places they are allowed? Haven't heard of any saving anyone.
What about Homeland Security? They don't know or care about people buying assault rifles and urban assault periphernalia? What's their first clue people might be planning terrorist attacks?

Yeah so you think. My guess is that the psycho criminal would have bought them illegally. Just like the guys in TO who are gunning each other down and innocent bystanders.
He wouldn't have those weapons to kill 14 people with.
I can see the possibility.
But based on the guy's background I don't know if he would actually have any connections.

The point is they shouldn't be sold legally to anyone. Once you get rid of the marketplace entirely there will be fewer and fewer on the illegal market too.

Anyway, guns shouldn't be available to the public to bring home.
If you want to go shoot some animals, there should be a special park for it and you give your gun back to the park after your done.
