My opinion on Quebec hasn't changed over the years except now I don' even want to hear about the place.



Unless one lives in Quebec what earthly good would learning French do for us? Even people from France have trouble understanding you. From a business perspective one would be better off learning Japanese or one of the Chinese dialects. Especially on the West coast.

I wasn't aware that Quebec was the only part of Canada where people speak French.

Does a New Yorker learn London English? Does a Australian learn London English? Of course they don't. They learn English and that's why both Americans and Australians could communicate as easily as any Canadian on this forum because it's English.

The exact same logic applies to French. Any educated Quebecer can effectively communicate with a Belgian, a Swiss or a Frenchman who speaks French for the obvious reason that we all learned the same language.

I didn't go to school in Quebec. Take it up with the various non-Quebec schoolboards.

Something annoying is that you anglophones expect francophones to learn english, but you think that it is unreasonable to be expected to learn french.

In Quebec, English isn't compulsory to graduate High School. In Ontario French is compulsory to graduate High School.

High school in Quebec ends with what the rest of Canada would call ''grade 11'' and you need to pass secondary 5 (grade 11) English in order to get your high school diploma.

Then you go to CEGEP which is a sort of middle ground between high school and university. It typically lasts 2 years (4 semesters) and the 4 mandatory courses are French, English, Philosophy and Phys. Ed.

The language regulations in Quebec are justified, at least for a high majority of people of Quebec. According to statistics, the Bill 101 was successful and the percentage of francophones has increased. I'm not going to argue stats, but I honestly think the language laws reveal that Quebec is simply not ready for sovereignty.

You mean like the Spanish media in the US? Or French media in Florida? Or all the French stations available across Canada?

Or are you focusing on the majority of English media that caters to the majority population?

What percentage of Canadians speak English as their first language? 80%? What percentage of Canadians speak French as their first language? 20%? :lol:

Because Chinese people chose to live in an english speaking area, but the French didn't. So French would have priority over any language of immigrants until the immigrants form a majority (not an absolute one though) and a majority of them demand for the change. That's my idea.
