I have one burning question, as messy as the entire operation of extracting oil from the sands is, is it not possible that if done correctly we can reap the profits from the resource and with proper cleanup procedures leave the environment in a better state than it previously was? Or am I asking a dumb question?

It seems a lot of people, but as you indicate, many of them are ignorant people. Protestors by their nature act from emotion and seldom do thorough research, like these peace advocators who gather in the city park singing hymns and praying, but they are mainly adversarial themselves........................mainly hypocrites!

Yep, they mainly see a "problem" they think should be addressed and appoint themselves as the ones to address it and solve it (hee hee) don't bother to consult any experts or try to negotiate in a sane and sensible manner. One prime example is when they protested a logging operation on the west coast and when the cops came to arrest them smeared themselves with human sh*t and climbed a tree and starting hurling sh*t at the cops. Very credible idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There already is. If you are capable, you have to be actively seeking employment to get welfare. Smoking dope and camping isn't exactly "actively seeking employment" is it?

Like all industrial operations, it constantly improves. So, it maybe done 'correctly' according to today's technology, but not as seen from ten years down the road.

And one of the driving factors to improve how things are done is the environmental movement, because it increases public pressure.

In many cases, the protestors do not question the underlying realities about the issues, they simply are given the 'correct thoughts' from whatever lobby they represent... And, much like a rabid dog, they adopt the most narrow of focuses and and march into a realm of idiocy

They call that spot the Black Hole. After the 'save the planet concert' that Midnight Oil put on, the ecotards turned that part of Calyquot into a moonscape.
