According to Harpo ...;-) we're not broke, either....

It costs more for a driver's license. So, not a big deal.
What is this citizenship card?
What is this citizenship card? I heard it listed as an acceptable form of ID the other day but not before this. I mean I have my SIN, my driver's license and passport but I have no idea what this thing is...
Now, if you travel:
Air traveller security fee, Domestic - $7.12 - $14.25
Cross border - $12.10 - $24.21
International - $25.91(all subject to GST/HST/PST, go figure)
Airport inprovement fees vary by airport and range from $15 to $40 in Canada.
Fees are just tax increases by stealth.
A passport from Canada costs $85 or more from the US or Bermuda, for a document that is only good for 5 years. This cost is way out of line, compared to other countries.
Can anyone explain just WHY the fees are so high?
I don't think $85 is high considering the amount of checking and scrutiny necessary to obtain an absolutely fool proof document. Renewing a drivers license can cost as much as $75, and we know how foolproof they are!
I think they are both too high.
I agree with a previous reply: it is a monopoly, so the government can gouge people and use licence renewals as a source of revenue.
When I renew my Drivers Licence, and shell out $75, I always wonder how they can justify such a high fee. I mean, I could take my own digital photo, print it out, and get it laminated at Staples for a lot less than $75. And if you have a higher level Driver Licence, such as a Class 3, the fee is higher--and you have to go for a medical exam, which is not covered by MSP. So another $100 - $125 for that.
Your post equates sucking and blowing @ the same time-they are or they aren't.As for poor people staying at home, that is like saying let them eat cake. Poor people arenot looking to leave the country, they are looking for work, food and housing for themselves and their children. If they can find a job they would be happy to pay for a passport.

To be fair, the cost of the passport has to cover part of the costs of having embassies and staff around the world.
Perhaps our government actually investigates the claims of people making the application
especially in today's world. There are costs involved and yes I agree there may be a need
for more than one photo, its called verification. Imagine the behind the idea that somehow
the market decides. There is no way in hell that I want to start privatizing immigration and
control, that would open a flood gate of abuse.

Canada will be coming out with the 10-year passport for triple the price, which includes the rubber gloves border guards use for the strip and cavity searches

I am consistent in my statement I said if they could find a job they wouldn't mind
paying for a passport. Of course if they had a job they would have money and
they would no longer be poor would they?
It costs that much to renue my drivers license every 5 years plus a medical exam that our so called free medical does not pay for so whats the big deal.
Not necessarily. Working full time at a Mcjob will just qualify you as working poor instead of just poor.
