Whatever else Jack Layton was, he was a statesmam. He cared about the electorate and the country. Who knows
what he might have achieved in another election or two. If the NDP pick the right new leader to carry on Jack's work,
the possibilities might be endless. If they don't, Jack Layton's work could be wasted. I'm not an NDP voter
but we'll see how it unfolds.

Whoa #Juan, you done good for the first two sentences and while there are aspects of the N.D.P. philosophy that can be put to use, it's not a viable party that can stand on it's own because you can't depend forever on someone else's money! :smile:

I'm posting this to retract my original post. Jack genuinely loved his country and fought for his principles. I should have saved my disagreements for another thread and time. Sincere apologies to those I offended.

Slow down there, Corduroy, it's not "Christianity" that is a "sick ideology" (if everyone did unto others as they wish done unto them) the world would have very few problems. I didnt expect this to happen so soon. I didn't think he'd be coming back to politics, but this is not the end I had expected. Shocking. I'm glad I got to meet him during the last campaign when he was at the height of his powers.

It's sudden.. but when i saw how much he had declined in the few weeks between the electoral debate and his announcement of the return of the cancer, it was like falling off a cliff, i didn't think it would be long.

Well i can say there was only a partial overlap of my political views and Jack Layton's... mostly on the need for sovereign, dirigiste economic nationalism for Canada, almost none on his New Age, post-structural cultural reform policies.. but i admired him, as i would anyone, who didn't cave in and grovel to the allure of power offered by the corporations and banks.. like Harper.. or Chretien.. or Mulroney..did.

He was a remarkable and charismatic character on the Canadian political scene, and his absense will be sorely missed from the dialogue. RIP, Jack.. God bless.

The man knew the clock was winding down and went out with style and class.

Yep.

I knew there was something about the man I liked, when I heard he like to get his freak on in rub-n-tugs.

All things considered, he was a better man than Trudeau.

I was pondering today the reason why I feel so much more personally saddened by this news than I would have anticipated. Yes, a death from cancer is always sorrowful and indeed when it does occur to someone who is well known it can certainly trigger us to reflect on those whom we have personally known that has battled this dreadful disease. I'd bet there are not too many of us that have not been personally touched by cancer in one way or another in our lives.

But I found myself recalling the election and the huge gains won by NDP and seeing his beaming, not smiling but beaming, face when the results came in. Who doesn't feel a sense of pride and joy when watching the little guy, the underdog, climb to the top of the hill? Whether you're on the underdogs team or not, who doesn't love to see someone beat the odds?

Sadly, in the end, he was not able to beat the odds. And it is so sad that he will not be able to enjoy any of his hard won spoils. He did earn them.
