I think very well thank you Madam Colpy!! Inspite of what you have managed to find about legal guns not being lethal to many innocent persons, try looking at the US stats on children killed by legal guns every hour of every day. You might also spend a minute or so on researching what happens to countries that use war and violence while covering their acts with "It is up to us to change what we deem wrong with the rest of the world" They go broke!! LOL.

Perhaps when the world was young and humans were not out-breeding, over-populating, avariciously consuming all available resourses as well as being the dirtiest species this earth has ever had to deal with, that country could possibly recover some semblance of normalcy. Not anymore. The resources are running out. It is no longer profitable to take a country into war for gain. You know, like the US's invasion of Iraq and the resulting depression. Wake up, China owns the US and is now working on Canada.

Guns and peace do not go together. Has the US EVER had a time when it was not at war somewhere on this planet??

You gotta find a real history book. What ever you are reading is in a parallel universe. Or maybe not even so parallel

In that parallel universe, apparently, Colpy is a woman. Man, they got ugly women there, I think I'll stay in my universe, thanks.

LOL.... I am old enough to know the difference between the facts and what the modern spin doctors have done to "real history books".
There is a difference you know from living an experience and reading about it. Perhaps your history books remember the "British Empire or the Roman one." Both now pretty well defunct. Not too many Emperors or Monarchs with the power of those long ago around these days.

Look carefully at those histories and then do a comparison on the ambitions of the politicians on both sides of our border. Thankfully, Canada hasn't the population or the wealth to throw into the world domination scenario. Our present PM may have the ambitions but not the wherewithal. The US has managed for the first time in ages, to elect a President that seems to have a modicum of regard for the welfare of the country's citizens.

Why shouldn't colpy be addressed as a woman?? bluebyrd isn't exactly a nick usually chosen by a man. Addressing him/her as a woman is a compliment. Women think first then act ......... Men apparently skip thinking altogether and simply act.

the Liberal Party deployed the troops as well. I'm not sure if this is really a partisan issue.

Yeah....in other words, instead of getting an education in the subject, you prefer to cruise the web looking for plots.

I know, it is sooooo much easier that way, no need to spend months reading all those big books with the long words, or writing essays on things that happened before you were even born, or subject yourself to the evaluation of your work by a superior (shudder).

The United States is one of the best nations on earth, along with the other English-speaking democracies.

Yes, they have been at war constantly. That goes with being a great power.

But I guess they didn't tell you that on THE LONEGUNMEN.COM, did they?

the Liberal Party deployed the troops as well. I'm not sure if this is really a partisan issue.

Not only did the Liberal Party deploy the troops, Jean (the Don) Chretien waited so long to get involved in fulfilling the terms of our NATO and mutual defense treaties with the USA that the only area left to deploy was around Kandahar..........in the worst area of Afghanistan. Then he sent troops without proper weapons, without proper vehicles, without even properly camouflaged uniforms.

You know, he need a couple of new Dash aircraft to run around in instead......100 million bucks charged out to the military.

Yep, all the Conservatives fault.

Not only that, Martin had gutted the defense budget by 20 Billion......remember this " Mr. Bin Ladin, there is some troops running around in the desert, and they look like trees!"

Cruise the web looking for plots not likely.....Madam Colpy (by the way, this is a compliment) Women do think before acting, while men....well you get the drift. Since I read on an average of 2 books a week, and I have no problem with long words, I feel you have confused me with someone else. I lived through WWII. You do know that your great country sold arms to both sides during that war and only took sides after the Pearl Harbour attack. Perhaps you do not know that it began in 1939 and ended in 1945. So who was hiding behind who's skirts??

When Hussein took over Iraq's oil for the Iraqi people, it stepped on Cheney & Bush's business toes, so ergo the headlong rush to invade. The only reason, they hoped to find weapons of mass destruction, was because the US sold the materials to produce them to Iraq in the days when they were friends. Surprise, surprise.......the Iraqi's never did anything with them. LOL.

I gather in your manner of thinking a great country must be an aggressive, violent entity!! It is precisely, that attitude, that begets a nation that cares nothing for it's sick, old or poor. How sad to feel one must protect one's self from neighbours and acquaintances with guns, bats etc.

Oh, but wait, I spend a great deal of time in the US and I do know also, from experience, that the average American does not have the idea, they must be armed to the teeth to even survive in that "greatest of country on earth"and that such an attitude is what gained the "Ugly American" nick in many foreign nations. Geez, some of your countrymen have taken to claiming Canada as their country of origin in place of being a proud American. Clear the gunsmoke from your vision for Pete's sake.

You really do need to expand your horizons. Where on earth did you get the idea that war-mongering makes a great country?? It doesn't. Neither does treating it's poor, old and sick disgracefully put it in the "great" category.

A few years back some may remember a big spike in shootings in the GTA. There were calls for touger inspections at the border to slow the importation of weapons.

In reality the rash of pistols that hit the streets were stolen by an employee of a Canadian gun manufacturer. He did the Johnny Cash thing and did it one piece at a time assmblying and selling over 700 weapons directly to Jamaican gangs.

Well, I guess I owe you an apology for the last post.....I thought you to be much younger than you are.......sorry.

Now, let's get down to the nitty-gritty.......in the first place, you have some problems with consistency.......you complain that the United States is a war-monger, and has constantly been involved in foreign wars........then in the next breath you complain that they were neutral until attacked in World War Two.......engaging in trade with both sides, as neutrals are wont to do.

Make up your mind.

Too neutral, or too war-like???

And BTW, the sympathies of the USA were obviously with the British people in that war.....they loaned the Brits weapons long before their entry, and Churchill and Roosevelt were engaged in constant communication on how to best aid the allied side......and the USN was engaged in anti-submarine operations in the Atlantic BEFORE Dec. 7, 1941.

I know my history.

Saddam Hussein started the Gulf Wars by invading Kuwait, a US ally. Saddam Hussein used WMDs against the Kurds and Iran before the wars with the west. Saddam Hussein was a monster and a mass murderer of gargantuan proportions. Hussein refused to follow UN restrictions as a condition of the first peace, and so left himself open to the invasion, which should have happened on the liberation of Kuwait.

The great, and most powerful nations of western civilization in their respective time frames....

the Greek Empire

the Roman Empire

the Spanish, after the reconquista

England

the United States.

Okay, now, a small test:

which of these nations was not war-like and often gratuitously violent????

hmmmmmmmm

Yes it was Para Ordinance and I'll post the news article for all to see (for those too lazy to click a link).

Gun Maker Gets 7 Years, Handguns sold to criminals for $500, police say
Bob Mitchell, Staff Reporter, Toronto Star

A Mississauga man who ran an illegal gun factory in his basement "like he was selling suits" has received a seven-year prison sentence.

While police never proved the weapons that Zoltan Balatoni made from parts he stole from the Para-Ordnance gun factory in Scarborough, ended up being used in serious crimes; crown prosecutor Brian McGuire told Balatoni's sentencing hearing this week, there was no doubt Balatoni's salesmen sold his home-built weapons to criminals.

"He produced illegal handguns as if he was selling suits," McGuire said. Balatoni, he said, was "motivated by greed."
The court heard that each weapon fetched about $500 on the street.

Police testified during the hearing that guns similar to those built by Balatoni have been responsible for numerous crimes throughout Greater Toronto, including murders, attempted murders and armed bank robberies.

Detective Mark Johnstone of the Joint-forces Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit, which investigated Balatoni, testified that since 1992, officers have recovered 224 Para-Ordnance handguns at crime scenes. Para-Ordnance is Canada's only handgun manufacturer.

He said 130 of them had no serial numbers, similar to the weapons that Balatoni had been manufacturing and selling from his Bristol Rd. residence. Johnstone said these untraceable weapons were ideal for criminals.

The Hungarian-born Balatoni, 48, was one of seven people arrested in November, 2001, following an extensive probe by U.S. and Canadian law enforcement agencies investigating the illegal trafficking of weapons.

The exact number of weapons built and sold by Balatoni isn't known, but the court heard that more than 40 guns that were bought by undercover officers and informants had come from Balatoni's basement factory.

In the agreed statement of facts filed in a Brampton court, Balatoni admitted the weapons had been assembled in the basement of his Bristol Rd. home, using parts smuggled out of the Para-Ordnance factory before they had been stamped with serial numbers. Investigators found that some of the guns appeared to have been ground down to make it look as if serial numbers had been removed.

Balatoni was convicted by Superior Court Justice Fletcher Dawson of conspiracy and possession to traffic in firearms, trafficking in prohibited devices (high-capacity magazines), possession of firearms, knowing they were obtained by crime, and possession of firearms, knowing the serial numbers had been altered, defaced or removed.

With Balatoni's sentencing, the crown withdrew all charges against his wife, Maria Markowska. She had originally been charged with possessing high-capacity magazines and firearm frames.

Wow. Thanks.

I never heard of this. I'm surprised.

Although I have to say.........you claimed this fueled a spate of gun violence in Toronto....I highlighted the phrase that makes that claim highly doubtful.....

It was a news story that linked the spike to stolen Para Ordinance arms and Balatoni that triggered my memory of this.
