United States
I haven't read all the posts, but I just have to say, I immigrated to the US from the UK with my family when I was a child. I never liked it, I never fit in because either I wasn't "black enough" because I spoke with an English accent and of course I am a foreigner with brown skin so I don't fit in with anyone else. I live in a "red" state and see that narrow minded, xenophobic, homo-phobic, racist, nationalist, garbage daily.
I think the US has to keep shouting that they are the best country in the world to convince themselves more than convincing other people. Other people see it for what it is all about. I miss the UK with all my heart because it is a great place and it was my home and will be moving to Canada because it is a great place and will be my new home and the people are freaking AWESOME. If the US was so great, I wouldn't have so many Americans wanting me to take them with me....
Enough said.

What you haven't learned is that it is not us crying out that were the best all the time, it is others saying that this or that is better. In reality we know who we are and our place in this world. you like Great Briton or Canada so much moveome, you will be happier and better off.

My assertion is a simple one: America is a country without peers. The United States is number one and there is no serious competition from any other nation for the right to claim that title. Contained in this list are the reasons I believe support my position.

1.The World's Most Sophisticated and Extensive Military

2.Opportunity

3.Separation of Church and State

4.Free Expression

5.An Enormous Array of Options and Institutions for Post-Secondary Education

6.Free Exercise of Religious Practices and Forms of Worship

7.Multiculturalism

and the list goes on.....

And number 3. There is no separation of church and state in Canada.

Actually, I would also question four and seven. Two is hard to measure.

There is no separation of church and state in the US either. the evangelicals have the Yanks by the short and curlies.

I'm with JLM. #1 is the only real difference and is just as much a curse as it is a boon.

OK, I'll have a closer look at all this.

1.The World's Most Sophisticated and Extensive Military

I doubt anyone will dispute this one goes to the United States.

2.Opportunity

This seems too difficult to measure.

3.Separation of Church and State

Canada has no establishment clause. The Canadian Constitution furthermore specifically lays out religious education rights to Catholics and Protestants in various jurisdictions. This is different from an American administration sneaking in some religious nonsense and getting away with it. Certain religions in certain places in Canada are constitutionally enshrined.

4.Free Expression
Freedom of expression in Canada is subject to the Notwithstanding Clause, which is conveniently located in an impenetrable morass of legalese somewhere at the bottom of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But in case you thought this might be an attempt to hide Canadian unfreedom, the Charter's authors were sure to let you know what's what in the very first section.

Rights and Freedoms in Canada
1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
And the United States has no hate speech laws so far as I know, or kangaroo human rights courts.

5.An Enormous Array of Options and Institutions for Post-Secondary Education
I would say that the United States has more institutions by virtue of being more populous, but options is another matter. Post-secondary education is prohibitively expensive in the United States.

6.Free Exercise of Religious Practices and Forms of Worship

I might vote for Canada on this one. Americans love their guns but can you bring a weapon into their federal legislatures? Not sure.

The deadliest weapons are idealisms not physical items.

impenetrable morass of legalese
That's where the ultimate scam comes into play.

A guidline for the masses but written it in a language the masses don't understand and using their ignorance of that language against them.

The rights of persons are sepearate from those of humans.

Separation of Church and State.

If there truly is separation of Church and State, why is the religion of the President always so important? Why is there a big deal out of having religious leaders visit the White House, praying with Bill Clinton, holding prayer breakfasts, etc etc.

The President is not the State.

"L'etat, c'est moi" doesn't go in the USA.

The people like to think they are electing a man of principle, with the highest ethical standards, a man of God.

Therefore the president likes them to think he is all those things.

The only restriction on Church and state is in the US Bill of Rights "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of Religion" ...... a restriction on the establishment of a priviledged state church (as in the Church of England). This has been expanded by activist judges (the bane of constitutional law and individual rights) to ridiculous lengths........but there it is.

The Canadian constitution makes no such restriction.....just the opposite, in fact.

Seems funny, but the higher up the ladder many religious types get, the less principled they get. One small example would be how so many TV evangelists and right wing politicians have fallen.

The two Jimmys come to mind, Bakker and Swaggart.

Upon giving this further thought I'm not sure if it's a characteristic of either religion or politics- methinks possibly more to do with some people thinking they know what's good for everyone else.

When Ted Haggard was caught doing methamphetamines with a gay hooker I cheered and whooped. I don't know how the hell people could possibly think he was straight. Then again everyone thought Liberace was straight too. Haggard says he wet to gayhab and God cured him.

I thought this forum was supposed to be about Canada...?
We like to compare.
