It was the era of “détente”, a word barely remembered now, which is just as well, as it reflects poorly on us: the Presidents and Prime Ministers of the free world had decided that the unfree world was not a prison ruled by a murderous ideology that had to be defeated but merely an alternative lifestyle that had to be accommodated. Under cover of “détente”, the Soviets gobbled up more and more real estate across the planet, from Ethiopia to Grenada. Nonetheless, it wasn’t just the usual suspects who subscribed to this feeble evasion – Helmut Schmidt, Pierre Trudeau, François Mitterand – but most of the so-called “conservatives”, too – Ted Heath, Giscard d’Estaing, Gerald Ford.
Unlike these men, unlike most other senior Republicans, Ronald Reagan saw Soviet Communism for what it was: a great evil. Millions of Europeans across half a continent from Poland to Bulgaria, Slovenia to Latvia live in freedom today because he acknowledged that simple truth when the rest of the political class was tying itself in knots trying to pretend otherwise. That’s what counts: He brought down the “evil empire”, when few others in the west would even entertain the possibility.
He was a likable buffoon but not such a great prez.
I liked Ronnie.
Yeah....with a name like that, he can't be all bad, can he?
Yeah, that does seem to be the case alright, he's held up as an exemplar by the American right in particular, quite unjustifiably in my view, as most of it's just mythology. He didn't end the Cold War, he probably extended it by several years with his belligerent rhetoric and useless intimidation tactics like the SDI. He gave credibility to the hardliners in Moscow and helped them stay in power longer than a more conciliatory approach would have. But a lot of his detractors attribute to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity. He wasn't a bright guy.Reagan will be remembered as a great president.

I know a few mental patients who exude an aura of optimism all the time but I doubt they will ever hold an elected office of any kind.Maybe not but he exuded an aura of optimism.

Ronald Reagan and G.W. Bush proved that you don't have to have a large brain to be President of the U.S. Dr. Helen Caldicot
called Reagan the most unintelligent leader in the world.

If you think Ronald Reagan had anything to do with Ukrainian coal miner strikes which lead the demise of the USSR you really should go to rehab already.
Agreed, but I said "more conciliatory," not "conciliation." Perhaps I should have said "less belligerent," it's closer to what I meant. Regardless, I still think the assessment is correct, that Reagan's attitude prolonged the Cold War by helping to keep the murderous tyrants in power longer than they'd have been able to manage if the West, and Reagan in particular, had been less hostile. The USSR collapsed internally under the weight of its own corruption and ideological foolishness, Reagan just happened to be President at the time it came to a head.Conciliation never speaks to evil, nor to murderous tyranny, both of which were the essence of Soviet Russia.
