Re: its not a bloody spill, its a leak!

It seems to me, given recent events surrounding this oil leak, that the entire system of transporting oil needs to be overhauled to facilitate greater safeguards and failsafes. It is unthinkable that there is no automated system in place to shut down—even if irreversibly—a flow of oil in the event that such a disaster sparks. It makes perfect sense for His Excellency the Honorable Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, to have banned further exploration of oil drilling during this crisis.

This Gulf Oil spill just proves how primitive Oil companies really are..The Technology Oil companies use seems to be as old as the oil they drill ...They probably wouldn't have had the leak, or at least would have it stopped by now, had they spent as much Time/$$ on prevention, invention, innovation, as they do on B.S P.R..

Drill, baby, Drill! Environmentalists Have the Last Laugh.

Prof. Zelizer has written a comprehensive and informative review on CNN, as to how Republicans have been systematically gutting the environmental regulations for the past several decades.

Nixon was the last Republican environmentalist, he established the EPA. Republican hostility towards environment started as soon as Reagan came into office. At first he tried to overturn as many environmental regulations as he could (remember his famous phrase, ‘Trees cause pollution?’). But at that he was not successful.

So he went to the next step. If he could not kill the environmental regulations, he was going to maim them. He drastically cut the funding to EPA. EPA chief not only did not fight against the cuts, he welcomed them. It led to drastic reduction in oversight of the industries.

Gorsuch (head of EPA) boasted that under her leadership, the EPA reduced the size of the clean water regulations manual from six inches to half an inch The EPA didn't make sure that companies were complying with regulations such as requirements to use modern pollution control equipment.

This pattern continued under President George W. Bush. Bush administration officials frequently rejected scientific expertise when making decisions and staffed bureaucratic positions with people who were not sympathetic to the goals of their own organization.

When some U.S. policymakers were insisting on the use of a better shut-off mechanism a few years ago, the MMS, convinced by the complaints of the oil industry, rejected their proposals. Congressional hearings recently revealed that the agency let industry officials complete their own inspection forms. They also accepted gifts from the companies they were supposed to be monitoring.

To be fair he does not let Obama off either, he has criticism for Obama as well, for not doing much to correct the Republican hostility towards environmental regulation. However, Obama has been in office for just over a year, Republicans have been weakening the environmental regulations for decades now.

But environmentalists may well have the last laugh. They have already got their moratorium on new offshore drilling, and any more cries of ‘Drill, bay, drill’ by Republicans are likely to be met with hostility by the American public (at least for a short while. Public memory being so short, it wouldn’t surprise me if Republicans again run on the platform of ‘Drill, bay, drill’ in say, 2016.

You'd think that this would be the democrat's slogan after Obama relaxed offshore restrictions and practically begged the oil companies to pull Obama out of the mess that he and the Dems have created.

That was just a figure of speech, Greenfish. I know this is no laughing matter. However, environmentalists are in a perfect position to say 'I told you so'.

Anyway, Louisiana, being a Bible Belt state, has been uncompromisingly hostile to environment for a long time. Let us hope that people there reassess their attitude towards environment as a result of this disaster.

Exactly this is a crisis where no one should be saying they're right etc, both sides need to grow up..

Re: US considers setting fire to Gulf of Mexico oil leak

Do they have balloons which could withstand the forces in question? A mile down, plus some rock on top of the well, that's a lot of pressure forcing the oil to the surface.
Like Les said, he used to use balloons to expand crashed cars when portable power things (jaws of life) couldn't do it. air can be pretty moving apparently. Physics would tell you water doesn't compress well, so it'd be even more moving. :) The balloon skins are pretty tough I'd say, if torn metal can't penetrate it. If not they could reinforce it further.

Or merely increase the pressure of the flow. It sounds like that's a major fear with this one... increasing the pressure and thus ruining any chance to stem it.
I think Les is right that the balloon would wedge against the pressure the more pressure the oil applied to it.It would likely hold until the pipe burst and as the pipe never burst when everything was running smoothly, I doubt anything would happen.

Pretty neat, enter your zip/postal code to see the comparative area affected by the spill:

Wish I hadn't done that. Now I'm depressed.
A few billion profit is worth massive wildlife death and other detrimental effects for decades to come. F*ck I hate greed!!

Quite so. However, as somebody said, no good crises should go to waste. If a result of this disaster is greater environmental awareness, not giving industry everything it wants (while completely ignoring the environment, as Republicans have done for decades), I am all for it.

Incidentally Johnny, I lived in Utah for 4½years (1971 to 1976). I did my Ph.D. at University of Utah (Salt lake City). I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Utah.

Talked about it today with hubby, who spent 10 years doing completions in much lower pressure conditions, and he said it most certainly wouldn't work with the well flowing. They have numerous tools they could use, but setting while flowing doesn't work.

But, Les can always contact BP... from their website... " Do you have ideas to help us?:
+1 281 366 5511"

edited to add... hubby says what Les is talking about are referred to as 'inflatable service packers'. I guarantee these companies would love to be the ones to put them in and take the pat on the back.
