Re: US considers setting fire to Gulf of Mexico oil leak

Assume 20,000,000 barrels of oil a day coming out'a that leak, then break
that down to seconds & that's about 230 gallons a second. Last I heard, the
broken pipe is broken jagged on top, so a ball would have to fit into (& not
onto) the leak. That's a lot of pressure...

Picture try'n to drop a marble (even on on a string) into a garden hose when
the water is on already & the hose is pointing straight up vertically. It would
be tough.

Someone mentioned on the radio today that freeing the oil flow is technically feasible and has been done before. Anyone ever heard of this?

Poor spelling. That should be freezing.

All far far better than SFA

That is very true BUT so many of these "walking encyclopedias" with all this book knowledge, have very little practical knowledge or common sense. In my line of work if you wanted something done or informatation on how to get something done, you generally went to the technician, not the Engineer.

You can't be like the cat that jumped on the hot stove. It's not the drilling that's a problem- it's not having the back up remedial plan in place to use the minute something goes wrong.

Lack of back up and remediation plans goes directly to a lack of regulation and inspection... which has to be conducted by the gov't, because as flawed and at times inefficient as gov't may be, industry isn't impartial enough to police itself.

You hit the nail on the head Wulfie- Gov't's role secondary to that of enacting legislation should be that of "watchdog".

You hit the nail on the head, JLM. I found the same thing when working in mineral exploration. Geologists right out of college were so wrapped up in the models they had studied in school that they would disregard evidence to the contrary that was staring them in the face. Instead of looking at the rocks and trying to figure out what they were seeing, they would jump to all kinds of crazy conclusions which caused endless problems on the job.

As they should.

Reading the New York Times this morning, I found an article about the oil companies having won a concession from the U.S. government. No deepwater drilling is taking place, but they are hard at it in places that are 500 feet deep or less.

Reading the New York Times this morning said:
I don't think you should refrain from doing something because it's not 100% safe - unless of course it's totally unnecessary, or no one would have an appendectomy or no one would fly in a plane. With the oil industry, I'm not sure that it's beyond the realm of possibility to conduct the business safety but you can't have the guy manning the boat running it up on the rocks.

Obama's bumbling of the oil spill

Notice how they keep saying they were on top of it from day 1? hahahahahahaha yeah right hahahahahahaha

Now look at this:
If U.S. officials had followed up on a 1994 response plan for a major Gulf oil spill, it is possible that the spill could have been kept under control and far from land.

The problem: The federal government did not have a single fire boom on hand.

The "In-Situ Burn" plan produced by federal agencies in 1994 calls for responding to a major oil spill in the Gulf with the immediate use of fire booms.

But in order to conduct a successful test burn eight days after the Deepwater Horizon well began releasing massive amounts of oil into the Gulf, officials had to purchase one from a company in Illinois.

Despite plan, not a single fire boom on hand on Gulf Coast at time of oil spill | al.com

Stop playing golf and campaigning all over the country Obama and do your F**king job!

1994 you say. So all those years that someone else was president nothing was done to have these fire booms on hand, but it is all Obama's fault. After all the guy has nothing else to do except check to make sure everything previous administrations were supposed to do, was done. Right.

Re: Obama's bumbling of the oil spill

well bush took heat for not 'funding ' the levies......if the booms weren't there, well? They can both take heat for that. Of course we need not bother with the 911 allegories.

My concern is the burning issue, IF sop was to burn, and, it was stopped as it was, due to environmental issues, well, I have to think on that and read more, clearly it doesn't seem to me anyone may have considered what would be worse, if the oil continued to slake or the sky was fouled, as to relative damage. We are however about to find out. I suspect we are going to wish we burned all we could and kept burning.

Re: Obama's bumbling of the oil spill

I wish people would stop blaming Obama for this leak...I believe he was set up for this by Republican Oil leaders...Look deeply into the PR..You might find the Face Of Cheney and his ol' Oil buddies in the oil outline.....

Just Bad greasy /slimey politics..

Although Obama should have seen this one coming when he made the deal to allow more drilling in the gulf....

He was set up

Obama is the Best President the U.S. has had in Decades ...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Environmentalists have the last laugh.".- ..If only that were true.....They're not laughin'...and they'll probably be the only ones that care enough to try and clean up the mess...

This Gulf Oil spill just proves how primitive Oil companies really are..The Technology Oil companies use seems to be as old as the oil they drill ...They probably wouldn't have had the leak, or at least would have it stopped by now, had they spent as much Time/$$ on prevention, invention, innovation, as they do on B.S P.R..

More time listening/Learning, less time B.S 'n

- Director Elizabeth Birnbaum fired ?....Time for B.P to follow suit ..All the top oil heads responsible for this catastrophe should be fired...

It IS just a shameful Sham ...

New Cleaner/Greener sources of energy are needed ...Are necessary ...They have to be given a fair playing field...Enough subsidies to Big oil /Big energy /The Big Players...They have enough money ...More needs to go to up and coming Energies . It is required ...now...!

Oil has had its day .They have proven they are no longer up to the task ..This business has become too much of a risk to continue...Things must /Will Change... Ready or Not.(?)...

" Only time will Tell ...Hope it Screams and Yells...Long Before It's Almost over" ---

Well "The End of Times " for Big Oil is Screaming " it's Almost Over" ...Is anybody Listening ?

The Light is Green ...The Future is Clear ..Green/ Clean tech is now...It is the future...
