Interesting article by conservative columnist Ross Douthat detailing how threats from Islamic extremists have tended to curb public commentary on their religion. I am not sure whether this should be here or in the religion forum, but it seems more political commentary than religious.

Ross Douthat / Not even in South Park? There are no more taboos ... except for those enforced by Islam's radical fringe

The simple fact is (and I said so at the time) we blew when we failed to face down Islam over the Danish cartoons.....which should have been printed in every western newspaper and magazine from Buenos Aries to Warsaw.

All we did was encourage them with our cowardice.

I couldn't agree more.

Actually, the Western World blew it when - strictly for politically correct reasons - it accepted the stupidest words in American (Hell, world) history, by G.W. Bush: "Islam is a religion of peace". Right after the horror of 9/11!

Absolutely. The bottom line is that if you are a reporter and speak out against Islam you've just increased your chances of dying a violent and untimely death.

Kind of a silly question. Extremists of ANY kind seek to curb comments from ANYONE disagreeing with them.

Really? I have seen many sketches by Rick Mercer that oozed with hatred for America and Americans.

Prove the cartoons of Mo were "hate sketches".

But that's ok YJ, that's Liberal hate, that's good hate. It has the seal of approval from the LPoC.

What the hell is a hate sketch?
Something a Liberal pulls out if his ass, to shut down freedom of expression.

Actually, in Canada we're supposed to let people say and think what they want. There's nothing more wrong with a cartoon depicting some religious leader than a cartoon depicting some other religious leader.

In Canada, we make fun of our politicians, our Queen, our sports figures, our selves.

Canada is, indeed, 'better than that', and should not be bullied by a bunch of religious extremists into toeing their particular line. Next thing you know, we won't be allowed to play Led Zeppelin in public.

Oozed with hatred? Does Jay Leno ooze hatred when he makes fun of France? Do Craig Ferguson, Stephen Colbert, and other American comedians ooze hatred when they joke about Canada? You seem to have a hard time differentiating between hatred and comedy.

Jack would only appreciate comedy if it was at the expense of liberals and democrats. Any other topic is foreign to his funny bone. He rails against hatred but is one of the most hateful people on here. Go figure.

You must be disappointed by our zionist affiliations, treatys, deals then. We are already discouraged, vigourously, from playing tunes at odds with that cabal.
