I've always liked him and really like his leadership in the HST fight. He knows his stuff.

It's too bad his term in office was during BC's naive love affair with unions. He would've made a great Premiere in this time.

I honestly hope the guy runs for Prime Minister. If he didn't win he'd sure kick some political ass along the way.

Yep, there's a lot that's good about Vanderzalm. I had the pleasure of meeting him personally in 1988 and definitely liked the man. Bill is the kind of guy who will take the time to talk to the common man, no matter who you are. There is nothing phony about Bill. I don't think he has what it takes for politics though and being religious as he is, he can't keep it out of the politics.

This the same Billy Vanderscam that pays dirt pimps with bags of cash? And caused the demise of the Social Credit party.
Anyone that is against the HST does not really understand government revenue and spending. If you eat at Rotten Ronnies or can afford to pay four dollars for a cup of poor coffee at Starbucks you should be contributing a few pennies to health care.

Too old.

Wilhelmus Nicholaas Theodore Marie "Bill" Vander Zalm (born May 29, 1934): that makes him about 76. According to the statistical average, he's got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

I was a political cartoonist during Bill's reign of silliness. He was constant fodder for my pen. I hated to see him go. He had colour, panache and two feet in his mouth at any given moment - a political cartoonist dream politician.

I never thought he was anything special. Poli-cartoonists lampoon the politician du jour whoever it is.

Yup! But the recent crop of politicians are like Sear's catalogue drop outs: no character, no fun to draw. Mulroney, Levesque and Trudeau were great. Harpo is so bland it is almost impossible to do a caricature. Iggy shows possibilities. Too bad he probably hasn't got a chance.

I wouldn't bet on it, Anna. He's a tough old bugger with 15 good years left in him yet I bet. He didn't grow up on the couch sucking slurpees and playing video games.

I wouldn't bet on anyone's demise; bad taste and all that, you know, but that's what the stats show. According to StatsCan, males are living to an average of 78.3 years.

I remember Vanderzalm achieved nationwide notoriety during the abortion debate. Supreme Court had just struck down Canada’s abortion law, prolife forces were in disarray, were dispirited. There was no prospect of another law being passed. Mulroney tried, but after a very bitter and contentious debate, it was defeated in the Senate, on a tie vote.

Anyway, there were several prolife Premiers around, I think Devine in Saskatchewan was one. Vanderzalm was another. Devine kept a low profile, he didn’t want to touch the issue, he knew it was a lost cause.

Not so Vanderzalm. While other prolifers saw uncrossable obstacles, Vanderzalm saw an opportunity. He twisted the Supreme court decision around, went through many convolutions, and actually came to the conclusion that Supreme Court had given him permission to ban all abortions.

Which he promptly proceeded to do. He banned all abortions in BC and thereby became the laughing stock of Canada. In due time of course courts overruled him, the whole exercise was ridiculous (and ludicrous). But it was great comedy, and it established his reputation as a clown, as a buffoon.

Evidently BC residents didn’t think much of him either, since he was forced to resign.

Quite so, Cliffy. I remember he was butt of many jokes in the national newspapers after he banned all abortions. He was a great comic though, I don't know why he didn't take up a career as a comedian (or perhaps a clown) after he was forced to resign in disgrace.

SJR, those were different times. And frankly, the abortion issue is a red herring. The politicians aren't going to be overruling the supreme court anytime soon. As for the rest of the issues, if you listen to him today he's the only guy who makes sense. And he isn't taking any prisoners on the HST. Masterful work.

Curio, Bill's making the Tea Party look like sissies lol. He's on a mission!

Oh, I know that, Kreskin. But that is my only knowledge of Vanderzalm. That and the fact that he had to resign in disgrace. Normally I don't follow BC politics, but Vanderzalm thrust himself into national spotlight by his nutty ban on abortion.

Every BC politician resigns in disgrace. What he did is peanuts to what happens these days.

He's on a mission I hope he wins. To anyone on here from my town - you can vote the official vote against the GST tomorrow and Tuesday at the Woodgrove Mall.

The odd thing about Bill Vanderzalm SJP is that regardless of how things were, people still like him. He's just an ambitious energetic guy that makes sense when he talks and ya just can't not like him.
