Is this the first time Canada has won gold when being host of the olympics? They were saying something about this before the games began, just checking i heard correctly. Congrats on the gold

Yes, you heard correctly. We've never won a gold on Canadian soil, so this is a biggie!

This I believe, is the third. Montreal, Calgary, and now Vancouver.

O.K. so I don't quite understand what the big deal was about having never won a gold at home. Maybe we won twice as many silvers as anyone else for all I know.

I would add that this might be the last one in this country for a while unless we hold the games in Calgary again,

JLM there is a something special about being the best at something. If you win the silver. it means that somebody beat you. I'm sure that we will win more gold medals in these games but it is nice to get the first one out of the way

Yep, you have a point there #Juan, however the gold in the physical sports achievement still only takes second place behind, the most important "race"- being a decent human being.

one of the athlets commented that - 2nd place is the

first loser.

those who are so highly competetive and strive to be the
best in whatever sport they do, want to 'win', anything
else is OK, but not what they were after.

I remember one of my daughters who was a very highly
talented fast ball pitcher from a very little girl,
commented to me,(age 11), after a very long grooling tournament,
that her team came 2nd and, 2nd 'sucks'.

I hugged her and told her how proud we were of her accomplishments, and she had been a winner many times,
but it won't always happen, but she went there to 'win',
and she didn't jump for joy at coming 2nd, it took her
a few hours to accept it, then life went on as usual.

Our daughters were all highly talented athletes, and
won many medals in fastball and girls and women's hockey.
They play their hearts out, competing against other highly
talented athletes, lots of practicing, lots of games, lots
of tournaments and playoffs, b.c. playoffs, canadian tournaments etc.

Its not recreational participation, it is different.
Good people, good sportsmanship and they learn to have
lots of respect for their opponant, battle hard, shake
hands after it is over, and move on, but that doesn't
mean you feel good when you lose.

Yeah that first gold medal for canada is 'history', and
his name will go in the books as the first one to do it,
and hopefully more will come, along with silver and
bronze.

I think they are all winners, Juan. When first, second or third place is decided by a matter of 1/100th of a second in some sports, the very fact that athletes make it to the top ten is something to celebrate.

:canada:

did you see the short track speed skating the other night,
where the three koreans were skating 1,2,3 and just before
the end of the race, one korean fell causing another korean
to fall, which changed the whole finish.
korea 1st, american 2nd and 3rd, giving them two medals
they would never have received.
Just the fine line between receiving a medal or not. Those two koreans lying in a heap together watching the race finish
were heart broken, but that sport is so close to falls
all the time, one would wonder how they manage to stay
on their feet as well as they do.
Yes, I agree all of those athletes are great, and it's good
that we recognize that, but for 'them', that fraction of
a second is crucial.

Right on Mowich, interesting you brought up the 1/100 of a second. I'd go along with 1/4 of a second but anything finer than that is bullsh*t anyway. In 1/100 of a second sound travels 11.45 feet. Any thing under 1/4 of a second should count as a tie. You have factors such as human reflex time and the different angle of observation of the various time keepers not to mention differences in the stop watches.

I guess when those racers compete against each other all
the time, (because the olympics is really just another
race on their schedule for the year), and they either win
or lose by fractions of a second all the time, (or fall),
those 'tiny' fractions become large in their lives.

The important thing is 'them' and how they think about
themselves and each other, and not really how we think
about them, we are just onlookers, they are the workers
and grinders, often racing in pain, with injuries and
race through them, without us even knowing.
Their eye is always on the prize, and they love what they
do, and love to win and compete.

A couple of those downhill skiers have had 6 knee surguries,
I can't imagine 'even' one, and they keep coming back to
race again, amazing.

I think all the athletes , from all countries, should be proud of their performances even if they don't win a metal. It took many hours of hard training for them to get here to the games. Many have had long long roads to get here.

Absolutely right, and for the actual cost of stamping out those medals (probably out of old recycled scrap anyway- not sure if gold is the material or the colour:lol:) there should be more medals awarded.

According to the Olympic Charter, the gold and silver medals must each be made of at least 92.5 percent pure silver and the gold medal must be gilded with at least six grams of gold.
