S.J. - I distinctly remember Ron giving a few examples a couple of months ago of how statistics are completely unreliable. A lot of us learned from him that day..................didn't you? Statistics are a large part BULLSH*T.
Everything about our political/social/economic/religious systems are BS. In fact our entire world view and our views about reality are all lies. We have been programed to believe in nonsense for thousands of years. It is totally amazing that more people don't snap and blow a lot more people away.

That sounds a bit extreme Cliff. You didn't get a whiff of some fumes over there, did you?

My views are extreme for a reason. I have seen what is behind the lies. How that happened is beyond most people's ability to comprehend simply because the lie is all they know. I can say without qualification that drugs were not involved. But some very highly evolved individuals were.

Sir Joseph Porter,

I wouldn’t have thought that academics would be capable of such irrational behavior
Look at it ... from the other way around .....or is such behavior reserved only for those without "higher" education .

, but I suppose we are all human beings, and susceptible to same emotions, prejudices and biases.
Well, we all have a choices ,"especially as academics" we should know and understand those choices .

Quite so, scientists are subject the the same human foibles, the same biases as everybody else. All the same, normally one would not associate a scientist (especially a female scientist) with this kind of thing.

Seriously Female/Male scientist are no different than mechanics or maintenance custodians. We all are capable of committing all types of crimes.

That is a sweeping generalization to make, JLM. At a stroke you are condemning a whole branch of mathematics.

If there are any reasons why a particular set of statistics may be wrong or misleading, of course one has to consider it. However, I think to a priori assume that every set of statistics is nonsense is a bit extreme.

I believe in statistical data unless somebody gives me a convincing reason not to. So if statistics tell us that Canada is a very safe place (and crime rate is falling), then it is a safe place as far as I am concerned, unless somebody gives me very good reasons to think otherwise.

I said a large part, of course some are valid, like most weather statistics, but most are suspect, because they are not compiled by the same people or they don't include ALL the criteria. To accept statistics because they are statistics is just not valid.

Quite so. However, scientists are trained to look at things objectively, not to fall victim to their emotions, to weigh the evidence carefully and form conclusions. Non scientific people in general don’t have such training. A shooting spree would be totally illogical, totally counterproductive if one applies scientific method to it.

And that is why one hardly sees any shooters with scientific background. And that is why when one occasionally comes across an academic (especially a female) who goes on a shooting spree, it is an occasion for surprise and disbelief.

Trying to make the case that scientists are somewhat non-human (no emotional problems) is also an occasion for surprise and disbelief. i.e., I don't believe that they are any different than "normal" human beings, with all the accompanying weaknesses and imperfections.

News has now come out that she shot and killed her 18 year old brother 20 years ago, but it was an 'accident'.

Yes, the woman blasted her younger brother with a shot gun after an argument right here in Massachusetts. Of course our liberal DA let her go because her daddy was a super liberal and one of the beautiful people here in Mass. She was also the person of interest in a pipe bomb delivery to a Doctor at Harvard Medical School who recently gave some of her work a less than stellar review.

Strongest economy around, manned space program, a super power...underdeveloped?

Quite so. Per capita income 97th in the world. In spite of all the achievements, a huge part of China is still dirt poor. China (and India for that matter) is very much a third world country. Don't let the recent economic advances fool you.

Incidentally, India ranks 126 in the world in per capita income.

They may not be any different from other human being,s but they have had training in thinking objectively, in not letting their emotions get the better of them. Most people don't have that training.

That is why one doesn't normally see scientists going on a killing rampage.
