They may not be any different from other human being,s but they have had training in thinking objectively, in not letting their emotions get the better of them. Most people don't have that training.

That is why one doesn't normally see scientists going on a killing rampage.

Hey Mister Statistics.... Per capita, how many scientists are there? Perhaps if everyone was a scientist, the rampages would become every day occurrences.

Well, downtown Shanghai looks pretty developed to me, especially compared to Spuzzum, BC.

Again, you must look at total GDP. One can always pick one place in China which is as developed or more developed than some place in Canada or USA, that doesn’t mean a thing.

Per capita income ranking of 97 (China) and 126 (India) tells me that there is a huge underclass in both countries, perhaps amounting to hundreds of millions, which is dirt poor, perhaps even starving. While middle class may be prospering, the huge underclass is dirt poor. That indeed is the hallmark of a developing country.

...or a hugely overtaxed one

right now textbook defintion, china isnt really developed and is still developing... Thats what im saying folks, china isnt going to bulldoze anyone in the near future

Quite so, Johnnny. I think people get misled by all the stories they read about India and China, how these countries are prospering, how they are developing fast, how the middle class there is much better off today compared to a few years ago etc.

And all these stories are true. What most people overlook is that these countries are huge. There is place in them both for a large, prosperous middle class (perhaps a bigger middle class than in USA) and also for hundreds of millions of dirt poor people, some of whom may be starving.

Look at the overall picture and both are very much developing countries.

They aren't going to bulldoze anyone in the near future but they could bulldoze just about anyone economically (us for sure) and militarily.

They also refuse to bow down to any outside pressure with regards to Climate Change, that is why they get underdeveloped status there and were able to sink Copenhagen. China will look to the interests of China and no one else.

if america were to fire up the reserve navy and airforce now, they would contain the chinesse on the continent, and blow up the part of the country that isnt a **** hole yet

Only because China has not really invested in a Blue Water Navy. I assure you we could not contain China alone on their continent. We may stop them from reaching California but that is pretty much it.

I don't think it's a matter of being a scientist or not being a scientist. I'd guess 95% of us are scientists to some degree. But even pure scientists put the tools away at 5 o'clock and do such things as go to the bar, chase women and all kinds of other activiries that can under certain circumstances get the emotions running rampant.

That's my whole point. To say a person is less apt to go postal by virtue of education, station or wealth is to admit a complete lack of knowledge of human nature. There is just a lot less "upper crust" per capita.

To theorize that academics are more sane than the average population indicates very little contact with academics.....believe me!

Oh, and I've got to go to the root of the thing.....what does "developed country" have to do with murder rates anyway???

Kind of a colonial-type elitist attitude, isn't it???

"Well, what is one to expect of the WOGS after all, terrible breeding, you know, simply awful. Of course they kill each other" (sarcasm alert)

Yeah.

They have had training in thinking objectively? Most people don't have that training? Do you know what you're talking about here? What about the many disciplines in business - accounting, for one example but there are many. Architecture? Law? Plumbing? Carpentry? Auto Mechanics? Meat cutting? Truck driving? Uh, I believe "thinking objectively" is not the exclusive domain of science.

Most of the common people I know who were raised right don't require a lot of training in objective thinking - they were taught common sense at an early age. Some of them were even Christians, who learned about "Thou shalt not kill" through their church. "Thinking objectively" is a skill that can be learned many different ways, even though most of them are obviously unfamiliar to you.

Right, because when they mobilized their military to the shore across the pond from Taiwan, the US military fleet "randomly" deciding to do some naval exercises in the nearby international waters didn't send them packing.

Just routine practice mobilizations on both sides. Nobody felt embarassed about that. Least of all the Chinese.

In other news, wing nuts come in all sizes. A toolbox just isn't a toolbox without a wing nut or two. Gotta love the human race.
