The reason Hati is butt poor is western developement, us Canadians have been and continue to be right there with the worst screwing the life out of that country.
Here are some photos of what Port au Prince used to look like. The beautiful buildings are a bit of a sham because they were built from cinder block with little or no reinforcing and they simply fell down in an earthquake that most modern cities would have survived.

I wonder who we are really helping by sending billions of dollars in aid. It seems to me that most of it stays in just a few hands and what does get through creates dependency. Maybe, when the dust finally settles, Haitians would be better served if instead of giving them fish, they learned how to fish - fish being a clichéd analogy

Don't know if you have noticed but becoming truly independent from foreign influence is not always looked upon as a good thing. That applies to our own Country also.

Just checked with the CIA ...... nobody is free from the bankers. This is how much we (the World) owe them (10 richest banks in the world) that amount has to be added to the amount they already have in their coffers that belongs just to them. lol

I find disturbing the fact that a local tourist agency is bragging that tourism is still up in the neighbouring Dominican Republic,while she commented om Haiti.
Since you perceive yourself an expert, why don't you head down there and rebuild the country?

Have you ever seen a modern concrete building demolished? If you had you would know that there would be rebar all over the place. If you look at the photos of the collapsed buildings, all you see is broken and fallen cinder blocks and plaster. You don't see a lot of rebar sticking out of the rubble. I'm guessing we don't see rebar because it wasn't there.
Adobe (the brick) is still common in Haiti. If not for its stucco covering, rain eats that. Window openings can be cut with a machete. I can't imagine it behaves well when the world shakes.

Looking at the photos of Port au Prince before the quake, it looks like a charming, tropical paradise. It was really a disaster waiting to happen. When I was still working I cursed the bureaucracy that forced us to put up with building inspectors and the seeming endless requirement for permits for this and that but a 7.0 quake would not bring our modern buildings down.
I was reading a forum on structural engineering, and the posters there (who are pretty much all structural engineers) commented on the almost-complete lack of rebar in the pictures...very little reinforcing of any kind, typical of poor countries.
I'm kind of wondering how anyone is screwing Haiti. 65 to 70% of its GDP is from other countries donating to it. Look at their hierarchy if you want to find out who was screwing the Haitians. I think something like $50 million went to Haiti from Canada last year.
