I'm trying to move this discussion away from unsubstantiated hyperbole and insults to a fact based discussion. (I know that 's unlikely)

Careful with those insults, they might be coming from you.

Not that you'd ever do such a thing as to insinuate that someone is lying.

No, you wouldn't do that.

AHHH!!! So, supporting the Great Fascist Superpower runs in the family! 8O

This is a joke..."China is not accused of committing ......... crimes against humanity."

I guess murdering and yanking the internal organs out of 40,000 people because of their religious beliefs is not a "crime against humanity".

Keep talking, EAO, your crediblity sinks lower with every word.

China is one of the very worst Human Rights abusers on EARTH!!!!

China Human Rights | Reports, News Articles & Campaigns | Amnesty International

You are particularly nasty today Colpy.

My son is a teacher at an elementary school and does not concern himself with politics. He is mostly interested in seeing the world and starting a career in education. I'm proud that he is making an honest living in country where only a few people speak English, learning Mandarin and enriching the lives of scores of children.

If you read your link regarding AI's annual report of China, you would not have found any reference supporting your belief that China murdered 40,000 Falun Gong practitioners for their organs.

If you read my link to the AI report which actually is the result of an investigation into how China has treated Falun Gong practitioners you would know that they claim 10 of Falun Gong practitioners are believed to have died while in Chinese government custody. They also referenced some evidence indicating some of them died as a result of torture and abuse. That report makes no mention of 40,000 Falun Gong murdered for their organs.

Either Colpy's opinon is not credible or AI is helping China cover up a massive crime against humanity.

According to this source, only about 70,000 kidneys are transplanted each year. About 1/5 from black market sources and yes this is a serious problem.
Organ Trafficking Is No Myth - Newsweek.com

If Colpy is to be believed, China should have flooded the black market with tens of thousands of organs. There are hundreds of thousands of people waiting for organs. Why haven't these people received Falun Gong organs harvested by China??? So where did all these organs go Colpy if hundreds of thousands of people on waiting lists didn't get them???

Either Colpy's belief that China has murdered 40,000 Falun Gong practitiioners for their organs is not credible or thousands of doctors around the world are helping China cover up a massive crime against humanity.

I agree, someone is not credible here Colpy.

I'm not scanning my passport for you.

Please keep the veiled accusations that I'm lying to yourself.

I not asking you to scan your passport.

I said "Most Chinese barely know about Canada's existence".

You said "That's a silly statement." and "I'm basing my comment on my experiences this past summer in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wuzhen, Nanchang, Beijing, Xi'An, and a few other places. "

If you believe that Chinese people know a lot about Canada, then I'd like an example of something which occurred during your trip which indicates Chinese people in general are knowledgeable about Canada. I'm not talking about a tour guide who makes a living off of Canadian tourists.

If you found this comment insulting:

"In the overall scheme of what's important in China, Canada isn't very high on the list. If you traveled there as you claim, you'd know that. Most Chinese are focused on China."

then I apologize.

What I meant was that your statements contradict what my son just told me after living in China for over a year.

Yours is no different unless you include the complete arogance that comes with it.

I was just guessing about 357BC being wrong because it was you posting.

Speaking of Alex, I believe I heard it said somewhere that he was gay. Even back in those bad old days it didn't seem to disadvantage him much- mind you that was a few days prior to '59.

From your link:

The 68-page document, produced by former MP David Kilgour and Winnipeg lawyer David Matas, is based partly on a series of telephone recordings made by the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of the Falun Gong in China (CIPFG).

I am well aware that Falun Gong practitioners have been making these sorts of claims for years, but as far as I know, they remain unsubstantiated allegations, not proven facts.

Allege: To assert without or before proof
Fact: Something demonstrated to exist or known to have existed

A phone conversation claming something happened is not proof. Its an allegation. Allegations alone are enough to warrant an investigation, but not convict someone.

I find it difficult to believe that Chinese authorities would be able to murder that many people and not leave a trail of supporting evidence.

China harvests organs from people executed of capital crimes. Its likely some Falun Gong practitioners were convicted of a capital crime, executed and had their organs harvested. But no reputable source has recently claimed China has executed more than 2000 people in a year or executes people simply for their beliefs. They'd have to have been convicted of murder, conspiracy to overthrow the government or some other capital crime first.

China has arrested tens of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners, simply because of their beliefs. Practicing Falun Gong is considered a serious crime leading to long jail times and fines, but its not a capital offence. Many of these people who have ben convicted for their beliefs have also been abused and tortured in prison. That's abhorrant enough without having to invent atrocities.

I had another conversation with my son about China. Apparently world geography and politics is not their strong suit. Most people in Shanghai don't know where Korea is, let alone Canada. Korea is a one hour flight from Shanghai. It would be like someone in New York city not knowing the location of Montreal or Canada.

Few Chinese would know who Harper is and fewer still would care what he says. Harper's comments would have meant nothing to the Chinese. Since the Chinese government controls what people see on the news, I doubt many Chinese people even heard them. His comments were for domestic consumption only.

Christmas is an open celebration in China these days and few here know that.

There are 80,000 catholics in China but no Chinese Bishops at the Vatican.

Would the rest of the Catholic Church **** their cossacks if there were the potential for a Chinese Pope?

Xmas celebrations out in the open

08:20, December 25, 2009

The streets of Xitang are dotted with bars, restaurants and cafes all decorated specially for the Christmas season; Santas smile from shop windows and glistening firs stand proudly on sidewalks.

People participate in a Christmas Eve mass at the Shanghai Xujiahui Cathedral. Gao Erqiang
Only a small corner of this ancient water town in Zhejiang province remains untouched by this festive fervor - the local Protestant church.

"We will decorate the church adequately and decently on Christmas Eve," said Xia Jingzhen, a spokeswoman for the church on Tuesday. "Unlike the commercial celebrations, we focus on spiritual peace and joy."

Her comments are perhaps a sign of how seriously the growing numbers of Chinese Christians in the town and across the country take this religious festival, which despite accusations of over-commercialization has steadily increased in popularity in China over the last 30 years.

There were 70 million Protestants in China by the end of last year, one of the largest Christian populations in the world, showed research by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The Beijing Catholicism Committee also said that in the capital alone the number of Catholics has risen to about 80,000 from fewer than 30,000 in the 1940s.

So are Chinese people becoming comfortable and confident about displaying their religious beliefs in public?

"In the past, we did not have a public place for fellowship groups and Sunday services. In fact, we did not even talk about our religious beliefs in public," said Xia. "We are really happy that we have a new church now. We even have our own piano and choir."

She said that the church in Xitang, a town featured in the Hollywood action film Mission Impossible 3, first opened in 1944 but was closed in the mid-1960s until the mid-1980s. It was rebuilt in 2002 and stands just five-minutes walk from the original location.

"The new church is 1,800 sq m and cost 360,000 yuan ($53,000), which included the land and construction fees. The congregation, which includes about 200 Protestants, donated half of the money for the project," said 50-year-old Xia, who was baptized 30 years ago.

Experts suggest that, although CASS studies show two-thirds of Chinese Protestants still worship at unofficial "house churches", Christmas celebration is finally returning to mainstream society 40 years after the restrictions placed on religion during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76).

Can you name a Mexican state without using google?

Mexico is the nearest culture that is different than our own.

Last summer, I was fortunate enough to sign a contract to teach in a Canadian Chinese Program for secondary school students at Xingtai number one middle school. The program permits the Chinese students to follow the secondary school Canadian curriculum in order to be prepared for future studies at Canadian universities. It is run jointly by the Chinese school and its Canadian counterpart in Nova Scotia. The program is a perfect example of the blooming mutually beneficial collaboration between China and Canada in every field including the domain of Education.

From my experience in China, the Chinese know Norman Bethune very well. Beyond that though, they do see Canada as secondary in importance to the US and the UK, though they do see it as an important destination for further university studies owing to the availability of English-medium universities in the country, and so still more important than most other countries on practical grounds. Beyond that, though, they do tend to view Canada as a minor player on the world stage owing to its small population.

Hey! You can join the People's Daily english forums and fill them in on the world and how cool overconsumption is.

People Forum

Have fun!

People's forum and Chinadaily are not very reflective of the general Chinewse population. It essentially comprises the Chinese educated classes. To chat with the average Chinese online, you have to go to a Chinese-language forum, and their views can be quite different from my experience communicating with both groups.
